Q: What do you use to apply it?

It was used on the cork drag of an Abel fly fishing reel. It was applied with my finger.

Q: Will it darken leather seats in my car?

I would not use it for that - it will darken them, leaves a slight residue and has a (not unpleasant to me) odor. It would get on your clothes and would not be good in the confines of a hot car.
