I have become obsessed with this stuff. Any time I eat at authentic (read: not American) Chinese restaurants, this is the underlying flavor.It can be fairly salty if you don't know how to use it. Don't add with soy sauce (or use less/low sodium). You add it to a broth or large wok of food. Don't just eat it on its own...... unless salty food is your thing, in which case, go crazy.It's not very spicy - just right to give that mouth feel, but not make you think something is too spicy. If you're using it to make something like mapo tofu, you will likely want to add other spicy sauces or peppers as well to heat it up in fact.My favorite thing to make with this has been cabbage steak. A seared cabbage with some shaoxing wine, soy sauce and lots of garlic - there's almost nothing better.

OMG, this stuff is sooooo good, I could eat it right out of the jar! It's not spicy like "Thai chili hot" but has that lovely tongue tingling "mala" taste with a super yum garlicky kick! I put it on EVERY thing! The only drawback... the jar is not big enough. LOL! I want a bulk size (Costco-size) container of this!

The flavor is exactly as I wanted, but the texture has some minor grit since they include the seed and not just the skin of the szechuan peppercorns.

I used this to make Sichuan cucumber salad. I'm not sure I bought the right thing, but it made a really tasty salad and I added it to garlic noodles and it was delicious. Definitely gives that Sichuan flavor without having to buy all the separate herbs.

It has a distinct smell, we threw the whole jar away.

Absolutely terrible flavor. Couldn't improve on it with honey. Don't buy this because you can't return it.
