Compelling story of fictional families while experiencing facts of the Civil War
Mr. Jake’s creates a wonderful story based on facts, and how two families from different sides cope with the tragedies of the Civil War. His research is thorough and incredibly detailed.Thank you Mr. Jake’s.

Wonderful and heart breaking
I cried through most of this book. It is filled with resilience and heart break. No one comes out of this war whole. But it is also filled with themes of family and friendships that span beliefs. I can't wait to read the third one.

Darker Than The First
I think it’s highly probable that Volume Two of the “North And South” saga is the reason the author chose to write the trilogy. I have no evidence of this other than, unlike Volume One, there does not seem to be as many random events experienced by the cast of characters (or happening in the background for them). There are far fewer incredulous coincidences with historical happenings, which makes this installment more grounded, I guess. But, to me, at least, also bit less fun.Following the logic(?) of the first volume, I would not have been surprised for a character to have been present for the delivery of the Gettysburg Address, the burning of Atlanta, and seated in the box next to President Lincoln when he was assassinated, trying desperately to catch Booth as he leapt down to the stage. Instead, the characters are spread out from North to South (and, eventually, out West and even as far East as England). They have their own independent adventures which, taken individually, are not as interesting as the whole of them combined. This book aims to be a sweeping epic, and mostly succeeds.Much like Volume One, the least realistic but also most fun parts involve the cast of villains and their various schemes. They are almost cartoonish in their fiendish, fictitious plans, and I’m kind of disappointed none twirled an oily mustache or threatened to tie a helpless damsel to a nearby railroad track. Instead, we get various attempts at being bad mostly because these bad actors are bad at heart and make bad life choices. Revenge against perceived slights seems to be the primary motivation, followed by greed and a little bit of lust. Ultimately, most of the villains come together in a poorly defined conspiracy to assassinate Jefferson Davis, which makes me question if doing some good for the wrong reasons still might be more noble than the “hero” character who becomes a detective and tries to stop them. The fact that this book is considered historical fiction and not speculative fiction should let a prospective reader know how this particular plot turns out.Anyway, this tale is definitely darker in tone than the first. Main characters suffer and even die, but that should not be unexpected when a book has “Love And War” in its title. Even with its over-the-top villains, it takes itself very seriously, and loses a bit of its melodramatic charm along the way.

Absolutely stunning
This is by far one of the best books with the Civil War as the backdrop that I have ever read. I finished the first in the trilogy and started immediately on this, the second in the trilogy. It clocks in at over 1000 pages but time flew by as I read about the Hazards of Pennsylvania and the Mains of South Carolina. The first shots are fired in Charleston, South Carolina and it has the families both sending members off to war. The inevitable has happened and Billy Hazard joins up with the Union and Charles joins the Confederacy. However, Billy and Charles manage to remain friends even though they will not see one another for some time. However, when Billy is sent to Libby prison, he will meet up with Charles again. I don't want to give too much away here but it had me on pins and needles the entire time. There are so many memorable moments in this book that I can't begin to write all of them down. Charles and his horse on their last ride together; Charles' rescue of Billy on several occasions; Virgilia and Ashton's absolute villainy; Orry and Madeline's great love, Charles parting with Augusta because he fears his death might hurt her too much; the list goes on and on and John Jakes writes about all of these so masterfully that I did not want this book to end.John Jakes has written masterpieces in "North and South" and "Love and War". The fact that at over 1000 pages I did not want the end to come is testament to that. The sorrow of lost love, the elation of love found, the horror of man's inhumanity to man and the tragedy of war are stunningly told in Love and War. A truly stunning achievement.

So much better than North and South
While I liked North and South I liked this book so much better. I felt the book was more developed as a whole. As one who did not pay attention in school while studying The Civil War I have really enjoyed reading these books. I never knew how torn people in the country were regarding the war and slavery. I also did not realize that President Lincoln had a darker side to him as well. I'm not going to give a lot away here but I felt this book actually took you through the war itself. You felt the hope, despair, hatred along with all the characters. As far as the Main and Hazard Families I felt a lot more took place between these characters as well as between the families than in North and South. Over all it was a great book. I really could not put it down and when I did I couldn't wait to see what happened next. Looking forward to the last book of the trilogy.

Amazingly quick read
I have the book which I've read twice before. I went to read it again except my old eyes couldn't take the eye strain. The font is very small. So I bought this kindle version. What I love is that you can make the font larger, I'm flying through it again. It's so descriptive, Jakes brings to life the life of 2 families in the 19th century. through the friendship of both the sons. You can nearly believe you're there in the middle of all the action. I'm finding it difficult to put it down at night to sleep. It's my favorite book series

A great series
I really loved the TV series with Patrick Swayze and am looking forward to reading the book, which arrived in a very good, though distinctly used, state.... a week faster than estimated!
