A few instances of inconsitent characterization
So I like Lynsay Sands, generally, and I liked this story fairly well. The problems I encountered with the story were mainly personal preference based. The heroine is fun and likeable, and very no nonsense, and the back and forth between her and the hero is believable and good. My issue is that while Lynsay makes sure to explain the heroine is a capable swordsman and feared pirate, she goes out of her way to avoid ever having her fight. Even at the end of the book where the heroine is confronting the villain who murdered her brother, it's the hero who ultimately engages and kills him. It felt wishy washy to me, to say she was so feared and talented and then try to keep her "pure" by never going through with allowing her to BE that feared pirate. You can't have it both ways; either she is a pirate captain capable of killing to defend herself and that which she holds dear, or she is a pure heroine who has never taken a life. It actually made me like the heroine LESS because Lynsay wouldn't commit. That said it was an enjoyable if somewhat disjointed read.

Grabbed me from the first page
Valoree has been posing as Valerian for 10 years, fooling all the crew on her brother's privateer vessel, and being a regular scourge of the sea. Then her crew decides to retire, and they all want little cottages in the country, and they take a vote. They decide Valoree must return to London to claim her family's estate. When the estate lawyer tells her she must marry and have an heir in order to inherit, Valoree is ready to hop back on the ship and sail away. But her crew once again out-maneuvers her. They have another vote. They decide that she should marry, and they even choose her husband. She is horrified by their choice, because Daniel is exactly the opposite of what she thinks she wants.Lady Pirate is such a fun read. All those big scary pirates in pink livery, trying to get Valoree dressed up and invited to soirees. As their drastic measures get increasingly drastic, things get very hot between Valoree and Daniel. Their wedding night was the funniest thing I've read in a long time. I don't want to give it away, but let's just say there was some light bondage involved.I have always liked Lynsay Sands books. This one and "The Deed" are my two favorites. We romance readers spend so much time sifting through pebbles and hunting for gems. This one was a gem for me!

Don't Let the Setup Fool You--This is Awful
ENDING SPOILER WARNING.Okay. I normally don't read bodice-rippers, they were my mother's style and definitely not mine. I only picked this book up in the first place because the cover art was so god-awful cliche with poor costuming that I was literally laughing at it. Still, the description on the back got me curious, and for a bit it seemed like it would be okay. It's not.The characters that are interesting don't get enough time, the characters who should be interesting stop being interesting quickly. Worst 10 bucks I've ever spent. What erotica is included--arguably the only reason people read these--is written as if the author has only ever seen movie sex scenes, or as if they absolutely hates sex but are trying REALLY hard to convince the reader they don't. I read a lot of erotica, and I mean a lot. This is some of the worst--and I grew up reading TV fanfiction, y'all. The writing style is all tell, no show. "This is why she is like this", instead of her acting to show it, "this is what he is going to do and the whole history behind the thought" instead of just doing it--ad nauseum. I found myself skimming more and more as the paragraphs ranted on. The plot setup is good, moments are funny, but the execution is disappointing, and the ending is downright insulting to the character as she was presented, with a hand-waved excuse as to why it was okay. It's not character development to have the character's entire personality suddenly go JUST KIDDING and change entirely 15 pages from the end. It's bad writing. (And seriously--don't set up a character to be "a strong, independent woman who don't need no man" cliche, then end it with her knocked up and him running her life because LOVE. Are you serious?)If you're into awkwardly-written sex scenes and forced tension intercut with pseudo-pirate-age nonsense that might be interesting if it were actually FOCUSED ON, go ahead, read it. But don't get your hopes up. By the time I had this book in hand, my imagination had written a story ten times better based on the premise than what I actually got. As for me, lesson learned.

Funny, fast-paced, and enjoyable. A great historical romance read!
*ARC provided by Publisher*Itβs been a long time since I picked up a historical romance with a pirate lead, but I have to say, I seriously enjoyed this one. Not only was Lady Pirate well-written and engaging, but the execution of the premise was so entertaining and fun to read.Valoree Ainsley is a pirate and captain of her own ship, but in order to gain her inheritance, she needs to become a lady and marry a nobleman. To say sheβs against this change in status is an understatement, though she does go along with it for the sake of her men and the promises that were made to them. But wearing dresses, makeup, and learning how to be a lady? Not exactly her cup of tea.Funny, fast-paced, and easy to follow, with a strong, feisty, uncultured heroine and an amused, dashing, thoroughly intrigued hero, Lady Pirate is a decidedly enjoyable historical romance read that does an excellent job of combining all of its elements into a fun and entertaining story.

Another great book
I don't know how she does it but Lynsay Sands has once again created an amazing book with very relatable characters and an imaginative plot. Highly recommended.
