The story of the ailing oil tanker ship was interesting except the technical explanations became a little boring. The climax came late in the book and was soon over.

Great
This guy writes ace books. Love them to bits. Unusual, well written, believable and bereft of stereotyped heroes and heroines, sloppy romance and bonking. You can keep your 50 shades of.......this is much more fun.

A book to read and re-read
First of all, cards on the table, I am a sucker for books about ships. I am fairly easily satisfied provided that 1. The book has a good rate of page-turn; 2. It is competently written; 3. The technical research is beyond reproach. In my experience Brian Callison's books meet all of these criteria in spades. Character development is concise but not overindulged and I've never seen a euphemism or colloquialism that is out of character or context. A Thunder of Crude is my favourite Callison offering. I return to it every couple of years when I have a bit of time that needs to be reliably filled, and I promise that the term reliable has no negative connotations. This is simply a great yarn, as applicable today as when it was written. Just be thankful that Calauria was not a modern LNG tanker!
