She's Come Undone

Every book lover must read!
I bought it as an impulse purchase and I am so glad I did. It sat for 2months on my table and I finally picked it up 2days back (already finished). You can really empathize with the character and all the supporting characters are so memorable. This again proves that you should never judge a book and a person by their exterior (cover/clothes/body). Everyone is fighting their own battle. The protagonist's battle with binge- eating, depression, marriage is so relatable. And you will be so shocked how a man could so convincingly write for a woman character. You must read if you are a bibliophile but if u r a first timer u vl b shook.PS: Got a used book in perfect condition!

Could have been shorter and crisper
Nice book. But I wish the editing was better. Few parts are very lengthy and boring.

It surprised me
It surprised me. I've had it for maybe 18 months, sitting waiting for me to read it. Why I dallied I don't know. But I loved it! And i didn't want it to end. It's a wonderful story about growing up in the 70s and 80s, recovering from trauma and maturing. The main character, Dolores, is portrayed in a very real and sympathetic way. I'm off now to check out other books by Wally Lamb.

Fantastic if you can commit the time to do it justice
NO SPOILERSAs with all Wally Lamb books, you have to be committed to the read not just use it as a casual pastime. This is amazing especially for a debut. I am of the impression that emotional rollercoaster is an overused term and generally ban it from my own reviews so I shall instead say it makes you feel a mixed bag of emotions whilst the bag is propelled at high speed and shaken around a lot.The writing is eloquent and beautiful and it pulls you in. Best read in long sessions at a time so it really affects you. I am usually too cynical to be someone who cries but this book made me tear up a couple of times. It also has the power to make you angry, embarrassed by the human race, hopeful and laugh out loud.If you want something thought provoking and emotional to read this is it. Just make sure you have the time to give it the justice it deserves. It really is worth it.

Amazing characterisation
Dolores Price is an amazing character. Unbelievable that she was created by a man, when she is so flawless, consistent and complete in being who she is.Not that who she is is always a particularly nice person, indeed, much of this long novel is spent watching her bumble through life like one big car crash. She is self-delusional, selfish, mean, but never unreadable.Lamb's great achievement in this book is making such a deeply flawed character sympathetic. More, by the end of it's 465 pages I genuinely cared about Dolores as I would a real person. She's Come Undone follows Dolores from early childhood as her father leaves her with her mentally ill mother, through college, up to her middle age.She experiences the worst that life can throw at her, dealing with obesity, insanity, close friends dying from AIDS, adultry, but fills her with such life and generosity of spirit that at no point does it come across as heavy handed or mawkish. Lamb never plays for the easy tears or attempts to pull on your heart strings so as a reader you never feel manipulated. For a novel that is about the search for love it is unsentimental and restrained. There is a real sense of control to his writing; you feel as if you are in safe hands from the first page.He has a knack of dropping important information on you without you realising. It is several pages into one stage of her life before he casually places her weight into the middle of a page and it made me stop dead and reassess all that came before it. Really, really clever writing. And She's Come Undone is blessed with an ending so powerful it left me breathless and tearful. I hesitate to use the term masterpiece, but...

Fascinating book
There are already loads of reviews about the plot so no need to go into it again. The story of Dolores and her ongoing battles with life and relationships are extremely well written by Wally Lamb. I've never read him before and will do so again as a result of this book. Yes she is unlikable and does some unspeakable things but who says you have to like a character all the way through? It is ultimately a very moving story with a very satisfactory conclusion. If you have an interest in mental illness, stories set in 50s America and difficult relationships then this is a story you will enjoy.

What a great read!
This is the first Wally Lamb book I've read and I devoured it over a few days whilst on holiday. It was easy to buy into the main character - she made me cringe at times and then when she turned her life around I truly felt like cheering. I was filled with shame to think how people who don't fit into the category of 'normal' are treated.Super read!
