I usually wear a large but looking at the chart, the medium 42-44 may fit better. im 5'4 and around 175lbs. what size should i order?

Given the info you provided, go for the large if you plan to wear layers under the vest, such as a hoodie.

what is the lengh of this coat?

The length of this vest is 16" from the bottom of the arm openings to the bottom of the vest. it has an elastic adjustable cord inside the bottom to keep it snug. I am approx 5'8" and it was a perfect length. not too short, not too long. it's very utilitarian with zip pockets. and inside pockets for gloves, etc... not bulky but warm. great value.
