Q: What is the difference between acid dyes or reg RIT clothing dyes

I am a long time user of Rit Dyes. I was looking for a particular color and could only find it in the acid dye. I ordered quite a bit of it. The instructions for use were the same---but as it turned out I had to use more of the acid dye to get the promised color. Then it was clumpy floating in the water. I let the wash cycle run a bit to break it down prior to adding my wet clothing items---did not work out. The pigmentation was uneven. I through out every item I used the acid dye on. I am sticking with RIT. Rit is more consistant and true and goes furthur.

Q: Will the color rub off on other fabric? I want to dye throw pillows.

As long as your throw pillow cover is washed and rinsed well after being dyed, it should not rub off on to other fabrics. I used these dyes on yarn for needlework for years with no “color bleeding” problems.

Q: can this dye be used to refresh the color of a patio umbrella?

It is possible yes, since the patio umbrella is likely a synthetic fiber like polyester or nylon this will work. Remember to use either vinegar or citric acid along with the dye so it will take. And you may want 2 jars as it is rather small for such a large project, although maybe still one jar is enough. You will need to heat it though to around 160 degrees F and not too far beyond so as to not melt the fabric (not to boiling).
