Socialism: Utopian and Scientific [Frederick Engels] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Socialism: Utopian and Scientific Review: One of the best summaries of socialist theory that exists - Most people begin learning about Marxism and socialism with the Communist Manifesto. That book without a doubt has all of the critical information for understanding broadly the communist political program (at any point in time), but is written so tightly, with each sentence so loaded with meaning, that paradoxically I think that a lot of people (including myself) miss a lot of what it's trying to say unless they know in advance what they're in for. It wasn't until my second reading the the Manifesto, after going through quite a bit more theory, that I really found it valuable as a summary. Not so with this. While the reader will leave this book understanding perhaps a bit less about the communist program than they would the manifesto, they will likely have a much better understanding of what the actual motivating theory is. Part of this is due to the time of publication. This book was written after Marx's Capital. and thus has the privilege of summarizing the key takeaways and insights from those works, which it accomplishes beautifully and succinctly. I think that, in the age we currently live in, this book makes a much better and more convincing case for the communist program than the Manifesto does. It is readable, unambiguous, powerful, and contains all of the key theoretical takeaways from which one can at least get a glimpse at what a Marxist analysis of the past, present or future is truly about. A great gift for any open minded person you know. Review: All communists and/or socialist should read this book when studying theory. Great for beginners as well, I find that Engels is much easier to understand than some other communist writers like Marx.
