The Buccaneers were NOT Pirates
"Henry Morgan was a PRIVATEER King, under British Government license, who led the Buccaneers. HE WAS NOT A PIRATE.Buccaneers are not Pirates and Pirates are not Buccaneers, and I am forever frustrated at historians who constantly mislead the public on this serious fact.Buccaneers were French naval sailors who were abandoned by their captains on Hispaniola's Tortuga island, who learned how to make and sell smoked meat on a BBQ device made of plants called a "Boucan" (hence the user of a Boucan is a Boucanier or Buccanneer). When the Columbus Family (who owned and controlled Jamaica) and the Jewish Community (who built Port Royal) petitioned the King of England for protection against the Spanish in exchange for possession of their island, the king sent them Henry Morgan, who gathered the "Buccaneers" and launched a decades long major offensive against Spanish terrorism in the Caribbean and "Spanish Main". These were NOT pirates, they were hired guns of the British Empire. Their era came to an end in the late 1680s.It was upon the collapse of the Buccaneer Era that the Gold Age of Piracy began, when people of every race, religion, social class, creed, gender and sexual orientation, rose up and declared that their Rights came from Nature, not the king, that they were born sovereign, and that they would no longer tolerate the monarch and nobility and corporations which deprived everyone of their rights and kept everyone poor. The pirates formed the world's first fully functioning Constitutional Republics (NOT DEMOCRACIES) on their ships, which would later be adopted by the founders of the United States. They served no monarch but declared all monarchs to be illegitimate. These were not privateers or Buccaneers." -Whydah Pirate Museum

Terrible book
This is the most boring book I have ever read. It reads like a thesis.there is no story.no development of characters ad no explanation of the relevance of the Meaning of the various events.most of the information appears to come from a notebook of the time I could have gt got from Wikipedia and saved $18

a missed opportunity
There is a great story to tell about Sir Henry Morgan: a privateer who was poacher turned gamekeeper as Lt Governor of Jamaica. Having spent some days staying in Jamaica's Port Royal in Morgan's Bay last month I was really hoping to get a greater sense of the man.But this book is frustrating in its style, focus and superficiality. I didn't feel I had a better sense of the man than I did when simply wandering around the sleepy remains of Port Royal. Instead there were accounts of some of his campaigns and exploits (which were interesting, certainly) covered by the rather fatuous remark that our so-called politically correct era wouldn't encourage such a character to flourish. For all his heroism and derring-do, I'm not sure that isn't such a bad thing! This book could really have done with done serious editing as well. Needless repetition, some dreadful turns of phrase and confusing ordering. A real shame.
