I enjoyed this series greatly. James Maxwell did a wonderful job at keeping the plot moving along with many unexpected twists and turns. He was unafraid to kill off charters. He kept me reading with anticipation as to what was going to happen next. I highly recommend this series to anyone that enjoys a good fantasy story. You won't want to put it down. Good job!

Rampaging Red Dragons
This fourth book marks the conclusion of the Shifting Tides series. James Maxwell had a daunting task in front of him with this book because there were so many issues, enmities, loves, magic threads, and plot lines to resolve. The series began with The Golden Age, and continued with The Silver Road and the Copper Chains as books two and three respectively. If you have not read those books, stop now, and begin with the first volume. This is a series that must be read in order. Each book builds on the events and characters of the preceding story. Our author does not waste time recapping everything that has gone before. You should be grateful that all four books have been published now so that you will not have to wait for the next one. The Shifting Tides series is fantasy. It is set in a created earth-like world with magic, dragons, shape shifting, and sorcerers. The world is non-industrial with sailing ships, archers, and horses. A ballista is the most destructive machine of war. This novel is filled with battles. The battles begin with typical aims of political dominance and end with a war for survival of the entire population. James Maxwell is a talented story teller and he does a good job of holding your interest as he shifts points of view and story lines. The story is complex enough that it could easily have been muddled, but it is not. There are strong female characters who are heroic and a strong female villain. The level of threat and violence is huge in this book, but it remains clearly fantasy and there is not overloaded with detailed gore. Thank goodness! There is some romance, but there is no graphic sex. I enjoyed reading this series and the conclusion was satisfying. He managed to wrap it up with very little exposition (only a brief interlude with the Oracle) and no preaching. Well done.

Who lives? Who gets the person they love? WHAT happens!
This just cannot get any better. Well maybe if we had Chloe/Dion's life put together sooner? No, that would have messed up the growth of all. But good grief it was still hard to read some of the time! Keep the tissues handy and don't expect to get sleep. Wonder if we can get the another,James Maxwell to write some more in this world?

One of the best books I have read!
This was a great read. I couldn’t put any of the books down. I loved the grit displayed in all their journeys. The world itself was fantastic and though it was fantasy, I could see myself in it with the author’s detailed and vivid descriptions. I enjoyed watching all the Kings grow through the story. I also loved the mentors/ teachers such as Zachary, Jarvid, Chloe’s bodyguard and others. Truly a great epic.

The Shifting Tides, an exciting 4 book fantasy series by James Maxwell
I have read all 4 books in this excellent series, and enjoyed them all. The story starts in dramatic fashion from the first chapter, and once one becomes familiar with the characters and the fantasy world, the action continues almost non stop from there. Based loosely on ancient Greek lifestyles and culture, politics, and geographical areas, but with believable fantasy elements added, such as changelings, dragons, serpents and giants. The story involves the traditional elements of good and evil, love, greed, revenge and war. Well written, with interesting characters, descriptions of the various locations and exciting battle scenes, the books will keep the reader engrossed until the satisfying conclusion.

Prophecy is Stupid
The problem with true prophecy is that it is the club to the knife of foreshadowing. The world and the magic has been explained. It might be loose but the magic system is hard. It has limits, rules and consequences. The author has written himself into a corner and any astute reader will know what happens after 20% of the novel. The characters have degraded in intelligence and the plot plods along. This book is a disappointing conclusion to this series.
