Fully functional for navigation!
I had so many compasses by now, I stopped counting. Yes, I never go outdoors without one. Yes, I rarely use them. So why do I always carry one - learned the hard way. Many years ago I got so lost among rolling hills deep in a Canadian forrest that if I did not have my latest Silva with me (which I put in the poket as a joke) I would likely not be writing this now. With this purchase I got the Sun Company MiniComp II and the SUUNTO Clipper Compass. Why? A momentary lapse of reason. They look so cute and the price allowed me to satisfy my curiosity I love them both, so I will keep them. Quality is top! Both are liquid filled (important). Can they be used for actual navigation - absolutely! They look like toys but are not. They are accurate and have everything needed to navigate. I am fluent in operating a compass and the tiny size is, in my case, an advantage. If you never operated a compass these might confuse you (depends). I do like the Sun a bit better. The bezel is easier to rotate. The longer base makes it very intuitive to use, like a Compass Bonsai :) I really love the free floating design. There is no needle to bang against on long hikes or motorcycle rides. It is a serious tool that takes itself not too seriously. The SUUNTO is very nice too! But the bezel is unnecessarily tight. The lack of “body” makes it a bit less intuitive. However it can be clipped to a wrist band, where the Sun cannot do this. It is a serious tool that takes itself too seriously. Yes, there is a needle, but it is in liquid, so from a functional and longevity stand point - needle or free floating - we are splitting hairs here. So - bottom line, I can now carry both discretely, have fun, and the kids will not roll their eyes … Ah … the compass … again :)

Great for Keeping You Properly Oriented
I purchased the SUUNTO Clipper to supplement my SUUNTO MC-2 baseplate compass. I attached the Clipper to my 22mm G-Shock resin watch band (which is fairly thick.) I notched the watch band slightly so that the open side of the compass clip (which has two fairly sharp plastic points and a plastic tab) grab the band securely. It fits comfortably on my band, but would likely fit better and completely close over a thinner watch band/backpack strap (e.g., 16-22 mm). When off my watch, the magnetic north on the Clipper accurately matched my baseplate compass bearing. Where it is attached on the 6 o'clock side of my watch band, it is situated on the inside of my wrist (closest to my body.) At that location, although a fair distance from the watch body/face, the metal in the watch appears to throw off the compass magnetic north by about 5 degrees. Even with that degradation of accuracy, I recently used the Clipper in that configuration on a 5-mile hike and it did a good job of maintaining a fairly accurate reading of north. To read the bearing, I found that it works best if I bend my elbow at the side of my body and point my arm away from the front of my body in a perpendicular position, and turn my wrist upward so that the compass is oriented in a level position. Thanks to the liquid filled jewel bearing, the cardinal points (N-S-E-W) rotate nicely when the Clipper is held in that manner. The luminous cardinal points glow brightly in the dark once charged with sunlight or a flashlight. The glow holds strongly for about three minutes, decreasing incrementally in intensity until ultimately faint, but still readable. I received the compass earlier than originally promised, so I was very happy with that. Overall, a good compass at a reasonable price, but should only be relied upon for quick direction finding to help keep you oriented. (UPDATE: I repurchased this compass in May 2026 - see photo. The previous compass, purchased in April 2020, still worked, but directional function became intermittent after it developed an air bubble. Not sure why that happened, but likely just due to wear and tear through my daily activities. Regardless, it has been a great compass. Amazon shipped both compasses early, so they were consistent with that, which I appreciated. I definitely recommend the SUUNTO Clipper for all the reasons I stated above).

Great Compass but Not Perfect
After getting stranded in a city where the phone navigation app could not connect to a cell or Wifi network due to all the tall buildings and narrow streets and provide step by step directions, I started looking for a "real" compass that would not drain the battery using the compass app on my iPhone. The Suunto Clipper is the third compass I've tried. Suunto is a great brand, making quality compasses for years. Pros - great price, well made, rotating bezel, and very accurate. Note: I always wear two watches, an Apple watch on one wrist, an analogue watch on the other. Analogue Cons - If worn with a watch clipped to the watch strap close to watch case (most logical location to use the compass): on all of my watches with 20mm straps, the metal, battery, or capacitor in the watch created Deviation, which refers to the error in a compass reading caused by local magnetic fields created by nearby metal objects or electrical currents, which can pull the compass needle off its true north alignment. While the amount of deviation was minimal to extreme, I am unable to use this compass with any of my watches. I tested this with five analogue watches, all with stainless steel or titanium cases. Straps also non magnetic. 1. Geneve battery powered "quartz", 2. Seiko kinetic, 3. Hamilton automatic, 4 & 5 Squale automatic. Also tried with Apple watch 7, the strap is too wide for a good/snug fit and also a lot of unacceptable deviation. This compass will likely work well clipped to clothing or gear straps. It will also perform well if worn on on a wrist on a separate strap away from your watch.

The Button Compass Most Are Looking For
Excellent button compass that is well built and accurate. I've attached it to a small paracord lanyard by way of a loop at the end of the lanyard and it fits my needs perfectly. The compass is accurate and can be used to transfer bearings taken from map to field and vice versa in an emergency situation. I've also attached a small compass rose/protractor to the lanyard to aid the accuracy. The Clipper is a nice backup to my Suunto A30 baseplate compass as well and a perfect everyday compass for general direction needs.

Which way is north ???
Ya know this would be exactly what was looking for if it actually worked as a compass. It’s size, clip on housing & compass dial all hits the mark except one very important thing! It needs to point north ?!?!? This thing is all over the place very inconsistent and yes if you are wondering I was very aware of my surroundings such and magnetic or metallic objects in vicinity. Fact is the compass is glitchy, inconsistent definitely not to be trusted in real life circumstance where compass is needed.

Keeps me from accidentally walking to Canada
Verified Purchase | ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Let’s be honest: I am a full-grown, large human being. When this package arrived, I thought Amazon had accidentally shipped me a toy from a LEGO explorer set. This thing is *tiny*. It’s about the size of a postage stamp and weighs less than a single potato chip. I half expected a tiny plastic Indiana Jones to come with it. But don't let its cute, "I belong on a keychain for ants" appearance fool you. This little clipper is a absolute tank. I clipped it to my watch band, and it immediately went to work. It doesn't need batteries, it doesn't need a software update, and it doesn't care that I have zero cell service. While my expensive smart watch is busy telling me I haven't stood up enough today, this tiny piece of plastic is calmly pointing out that I am currently walking in the exact opposite direction of my truck. The Pros: Weightless:You will forget it’s there until you actually need it to survive. The Clip: It grips onto a watch strap or backpack webbing like a caffeinated crab. It’s not falling off. Luminescent:It glows in the dark just enough for you to see exactly how lost you are at 2:00 AM. The Cons: It is so small that if you drop it in the autumn leaves, you aren't finding the compass—you're going to need a second, slightly larger compass to locate the first compass. If you have a habit of wandering off the trail because a cool rock caught your eye, just buy it. It clips out of the way, does one job, and does it perfectly. 10/10, would avoid wandering aimlessly into the wilderness again.

Could use durability improvements
So far I’ve purchased this twice and both units failed to hold together under normal use. Overall I like the size and accuracy well enough. The luminescence is spot on being bright and long lasting. The height this sits above the watch band is quite good as well keeping a tight fit close to the wrist. I’m about to order a third unit hoping these manufacturer has improved the retention on the ring.

Great for Snapshot of Direction
Perfect for hiking, trail running and other activity where a quick confirmation of direction is required. Not a substitute for a proper compass to be used for precise land nav but it does the job. Great backup in a "possibles kit".

Good quality mini compass, weak attachment point.
It's pricey for the weak/brittle plastic attachment point. Which BTW if broken you have no other way to attach the the compass to anything. The Compass part is on point. Good quality, what you would expect from Sunto. As well the bearing indicator dial is stiff as you would want. I used it on a week trip to Spain. It worked well in unfamiliar city's and mountain hikes.
