will it work for gasoline

This is a filter for diesel engines only, so it will not work for gasoline as the compatible engine would not be able to run on gasoline.

As far as an "adapter"; are you talking about the Fleetguard fuel filter head or is there something that screws onto my oem fuel filter head ?

I have a 2005 Dodge Ram 5.9 cummins. This does NOT screw on in place of my original equipment filter. I placed mine as a secondary filter on a separate filter mount I had to buy, between the stock filter and the high pressure pump. The stock filter has water separation (necessary) and catches most particles down to 7 micron. This catches smaller stuff the factory filter misses down to 2-3 micron. After several changes due to low fuel pressure I can say the Fleetguard FF5320 catches a lot of crud that gets past the OE filter element. I highly recommend using a fuel pressure gauge with this filter. Mount the sender after the Fleetguard filter. If you get below 7lb pressure replace the stock filter. If pressure is still low replace the spin-on Fleetguard. When they start plugging up they generally go fast. I carry extra filters and tools to change either filter when on the road. I've had to do that twice when towing heavy.

what is the micron rating ?

Info that I have has it as 5 micron absolute with a secondary rating of 2 micron. The Donaldson 551313 would is rated at less than 3 micron and the Cat 1R-0750 is rated at 4 micron absolute. They are all generally called 2 micron filters. As you probably noticed Fleetguard does no make their specifications readily available. I suggest the Donaldson or Cat as a better choice for a "2" micron filter.

I bought an adapter kit off the web that allows me to replace the very expensive OEM filters ($50-60) for my Chevy Duramax with these nicely priced filters that do a better job of filtration. I've been using this setup for over a year. No issues and no fuel related problems. I added a wheel well door from the same place that makes the adapter that allows me to change the filter without removing the wheel and liner. Big time and dollar savings all around.
