Don’t know if you can buy just the brackets. I did the same as you, so I returned them and bought ones with brackets.

Q: Are these interchangeable? I cannot get one to fit the left side of the liftgate.

Yes they are interchangeable. I managed to fit both left and right. The ends of the supports can be twisted around the ball joints so that they are mirror images of each other. Maybe it will fit the left side then.
