There are no tools out there to fix dummies. You still need a good understanding of electrical circuits and excellent troubleshooting skills. This tool has saved me lots of time. If your short is under the dash area it will be harder to pinpoint cause it is hard to reach in that area. **Q: can this be used on a single wire to send the signal or does it need to be used at the fuse panel?** A: Yes. It can be used on a single wire, as long as you connected series. **Q: can you use this on a wie that's un powered to find a break or short** A: yes we can the transmitter power the line **Q: can it be used to find a short in de-energized wiring in wall of a house** A: I would have say no because in a car there is 12 DC volts in line for power to find the break..this device is made to take up to 42 DC volts not AC volts like found in a house...Maybe you could put 12 volts DC through your house wiring and use this tool to find the short,,, BUT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE NO FEED BACK TO YOUR MAIN POWER...I would be very carefull.... Reading the instructions is a must to get a good baseline of the tools functionality. I used it to "test" trace a wire in the interior lighting circuit of a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee using the blades in placemnet of the lighting fuse in the main fuse box and I was able to follow the wire without taking anything apart, I did have to use the receiver on its hightest sensitivity setting and it does take a little practice to understand how to maneuver the receivers probe but it worked well none the less. I also used on the same vehicle using the process of disconnecting the RR brake wire at the light and applying 12v to one lead of the transmitter and attaching the other lead of the transmitter to the wire from the brake pedal and it worked just as it did on video.
