How deep is the safe part ( inside storage compartment)? of the xlarge

I use mine to store documents and photos. A 5x7 photo fits with extra space but the 8x10 does not fit flat.. so its somewhere in between to two sizes. business size envelope can fit with room to spare. but an 8x11 inch page would not fit if unfolded.

Is there a way to recover or reset the combination if its been forgotten?

Unfortunately, our safe does not have a reset button. However, you can try turning the first wheel of the dial slowly. You should be able to feel the clicks as you turn. When it lines up with the "correct" number, it should feel slightly different. Do this for the remaining wheels and you should be able to unlock the safe.
