Formula seems to have changed
I have been using timbermate for years, but this is the first time I ordered it during the winter. When I opened up the container, it was very stiff and un-usable. I left it in the house overnight to warm it up, but it was still a thick gel consistency that would not spread. I tried mixing some with warm water, but just couldn't mix out all the lumps. So, I put that original stuff back in the main quart container, added more hot water, then microwaved the whole thing for one minute in a 900-Watt microwave. After that, I was able to mix is using a screwdriver and a great deal of elbow grease. It took a lot of effort, but that got it back to the paste consistency I am accustomed to. As it cooled down, it seemed to be going back to that gel consistency, so it will probably need more water and microwave time when I need it again. I think I may have gotten a container that is somewhat dried out, as I remember it being a smooth paste consistency from the time it is first opened, only getting thicker with age. Nonetheless, after a great deal of effort to get it to the right consistency, it worked well.

Timbermate, Steel putty knife, and Oak
I use this to grain fill oak among other things. Now for the interesting twist, I put the full strength product on a small section and then lightly spray the board with water, this has the result of thinning the timbermate. I was using a steel putty knife to spread the filler when I noticed some black streaks starting to appear. (Hummm). I had a very hard time sanding out the black steaks then I realized that the timbermate must have been leaching iron from the steel putty knife, combined with the tannin in the oak and those two combined will ebonize wood. See photo. Redid the grain fill using a plastic putty knife and everything came out very nice. I also left a picture when I reviewed Timbermate Wood Filler WB 1 Quart Natural. The product I used was white oak.

Perfect Fill and Color Match
Fills and matches oak perfectly. However, it softens and is somewhat removed when painted/stained with a brush. Roll-out is better.

This product was so highly reviewed all over the internet I was really disappointed. Takes stain much darker than real wood and really stands out. Does shrink despite claims.
