Do the units kill mold and viruses?

The pureAir 3000 air purifier includes two technologies proven to kill  mold, bacteria and viruses.  These technologies are Photo Catalytic Oxidation (PCO) and activated oxygen or ozone (O3).  Both of these technologies break down these unwanted air pollutants at the molecular level.  PCO has been verified to not only kill bacteria, virus and fungi (mold), but also to eliminate odors.
Bacteria is a single cell creature with a relatively solid-cell membrane.  Both PCO and O3 interfere with the metabolism of bacterium-cells and are able to break through the cell membrane, which leads to the destruction of the bacteria.
Viruses are small, independent particles, built of crystals and macromolecules.  Again, both PCO and O3 destroy viruses by breaking through the protein coat into the core, resulting in destruction of the virus. 
Mold spreads by creating reproductive cells called spores and sending them into the environment. Mold spores are too small to detect with the naked eye. They are everywhere around us and you cannot avoid being exposed to them.  Certainly, you want to make every effort to remove any environments that promote mold growth.  These  would include preventing leaks due to rain or plumbing and to regularly clean places that may accumulate humidity such as showers, faucets and pipes and the floor areas around such fixtures.
However,  in addition to these preventative measures for reducing mold, again, both PCO and O3 are effective agents is destroying active mold spores that may be in the air.

There is a odor to it. Is this normal for this unit?  If so, how long does it last

This is a great question. If you stick your nose right in front of the unit while it is running you will notice an odor. It is normal to smell it right in front of the grille but you should not smell it in your room while it is running. If you do smell it in the room, turn the purifier setting down. The goal is for your room to not have any smells, indicating that the air is completely clean and fresh.
