Brave adventure
I really loved this book - great bit of escapism. Loved this brave little family and following them from the previous novel in their travels

Calling All Ikarians- By blood or by proxy!
I chose this book for vacation reading since my father is from Ikaria & I haven't been able to spend a summer there for many years. Nick Perry was spot on with his descriptive memories of this island where time truly does stand still. I found myself laughing out loud at some of his snarky, yet accurate, interjections on the simple way of life that he grasped well. From the "island time" addtional 1/2 hr, so many avrios & the slowest houses ever built, to becoming Ikarian at the panayiris. "Neeko" truly captured the magic of Ikaria: I could hear the rhythmic buzz of the cicadas, feel the skin of the delicately peeled figs and see the luminescent sparkles of the sea under the moonlight- all over again. I guess just as those before us, for hundreds of years, we've all been under the same spell. The characters were depictions of people I also know so well. The quirkiness and charm made me fall in love with them- by the end, I was brought to tears as I read about Sister Ulita. What I was drawn to, on a personal note, was his account of the construction of Toula Hotel. When I visited Ikaria circa 1990, as an adventurous teen, I heard of this mysterious hotel. Nothing could have prepared me for the palatial magnitude of this structure- it was so out of place on this little island. Its presence was hypnotizing and drew us in to explore, long before the vandals had taken hold (this is a whole other story which I may have to write about). I was so thrilled to have read about the author's experience building this grand hotel- I finally got some closure on the curiosities I held for all these years. If you are Ikarian & longing to return, or looking to take a trip to a small Greek island- maybe Ikaria- give this book a read- it will hold you over until you can actually get there!
