CHANGE YOUR LIFE!
I've done four Spartan races over four years, but never knew the story behind the race. As it turns out, it's not just a race, it's a way of life, as this book chronicles so well. Joe is crazy, and I love him for being that way, his wife too and all their immediate and extended family. I'm going through the book again, this time with a highlighter to underline the parts of the book that will MAKE MY LIFE BETTER. I recommend this book, especially as a gift to people you know who need a not-so-gentle-nudge to get off the metaphorical couch of life in the modern world. There are many things to change in ourselves, and in the way we live. Aroo!

Lead an epic life
Spartan Up! doesn't compartmentalize into a genre easily. At times the book is part autobiography, part self-help, part how-to manual, part philosophy, and part history--as well as promotional material for Spartan Races. However, this book avoids the trappings of other texts that become obnoxious extended advertisements. Joe's passion for encouraging the masses to lead epic lives trumps Joe the business man.The book has a logical progression from chapter to chapter, connecting concepts and material in an easily digestible and pleasant to read format. Early in the book, Joe establishes his credibility as an endurance athlete--and a relatively insane one at that if you're unfamiliar with his background. The first two chapters offer background into Joe's upbringing and the creation of Spartan Race. The remainder of the text introduces and explains concepts alongside real-life applications. For example. Joe uses the concept of 'the cookie test' to highlight what it means to delay gratification and the rewards of doing so.In addition to crossing the above-mentioned genres, the text also includes brief biographical sketches of racers. I truly enjoyed reading these stories of transformation and feel honored to personally know quite a few of the folks mentioned. I think including these stories added value and were appropriately placed within the overall book. While I thought the book was going to be more of a how-to prepare for Spartan Races, I was pleased that significant parts of the book addressed concepts like failure, entitlement, self-imposed limitations, mindsets, comfort, communication, and family life.Overall, this is a worthwhile book that I'd recommend. There were many quotable lines and I found myself taking notes and underlining sentences while reading.Want to live an epic life? Want to know why some work hard to reach the top of the hill and what the view looks like? As Joe says, "nothing tops the feeling of continuing when you feel like giving up". What we can achieve has everything to do with what we believe we can achieve. This book helps focus or maybe adjust your frame of reference and would benefit anyone that wants to take control of their lives and health. As a final note--and this is the teacher in me--I only noted 3 minor proofreading errors: 1) "the" instead of "then" on p.3, 2) "to eat to eat"--repeated phrase on p.108, and 3) referring to a race as a Super Beast (it's just a Super) on p.182. Not too shabby. :)
