The dimensions between the 2 shelves are 30 x 6.5. Can easily fit 3 shoe boxes on each shelf and if plastic shoe box is comparable size as well. Hope this helps.

Q: Is the middle shelf removable if i dont want to install it?

The shelves are removable, but you need to have at least one of them installed to stabilize the bench. So, if you don't want the middle shelf leave it off when you assemble the bench.
