Rico M7 Metalite Mouthpiece for Baritone Sax

Q: From a scale of 1-10 how easy is it to play using this mouthpiece?

This is an excellent mouthpiece for the price and can easily compete with mouthpieces that are 100 dollars or more. I would give this about a 7/10 for ease of play, and I would recommend the M7 or M9 for most players.

Q: What ligature and cap works on this mouthpiece?

I have an older Selmer ligature that works fine. The cap works also.

Q: What size reed is best? I usually use 3 1/2 and struggling to get a sound.

31/2 probably is OK for a M 5 opening, but I would go for an M7 Metalite with a softer reed (1 1/2 or 2) . I use a 1.5 Vandren Java for my M7, Rovner Versa Lig and love it. I have never cared for a #5 mp on an alto (its not very loud & the reed closes up). I like the open M7 , with a softer reed, which plays nice , easy, and loud. I would buy one of each, an M5 & M7 so you can see the difference, because they don' cost much. ( The M7 works nice at high F# and above). On Tenor , I play an M9 (not made for alto) and a Java 2 1/2 that works great. School Music teachers tend to go for 2 to 21/2 reeds for stock alto pieces (usually #5) so they can standardize on one reed size, which is cheaper
