I think they can be used to decorate a cake, although they might shed a little as the tiny green can fall off if touched too much.

can these be used in aquariums?

Definitely not, the trees are made with a foam that flakes off with even mild handling (this is really normal for miniature trees, I don't count that against them). They are best used for dioramas and wargaming, things of that nature—where the foam falling off doesn't hurt anything.

Can the trees stand up by themselves?

No, the trees do not stand up by themselves. They have no "base." You either have to drill a hole to insert the stem, or use a nail to hammer a hole. Drilling is easier.
