Q: Does the grinder leave traces behind in the cabinet?

Yes, the mill leaves fine particles. We solved the issue by acquiring a small saucer from the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite. Now we have no particles on our shelf or table, and a lovely reminder of our stay in Yosemite National Park.

Q: What's the difference between sizes? Is it just personal preference or is it easier to grind with the longer ones?

It just personal preference. It grinds easily no matter the size, sometimes I want a finer grind so it is easier to mix the pepper into what I am cooking, other times I like to use a larger grind. This style allows more control over the size than the normal department store grinders that you typically see where the single screw that holds the top on also determines how fine the pepper is ground.

Q: What's the relationship of the adjustment settings on the bottom and the adjustment knob on the top?

While it is possible to adjust coarseness of the grind using the knob on the top, I believe that the intent is a more consistent variation with the adjustment range on the bottom. I think the grinding mechanism works best when the top screw is tight.
