Gorgeous Show, Gorgeous Book!
We were just over at the Renwick to see this show, and it is stupendous. I looked through the book and it makes a terrific impression, with sharp photos of the dramatic objects, and informative text. I particularly like seeing photos of how the collectors have the objects displayed in their home. Wow, I thought we have a lot of art objects in a space, by comparison now I realize we are minimalist! The Bresler collection clearly has been chosen with such care, every piece is an A+ as collector- types like to say. One has to note that while I am sure that art objects were purchased at a considerably dear price, of course that is relative to what great paintings would cost. And it is further worth noting that many collectors of extremely blue-chip canvasses are unlikely to get such a gorgeous showing for their treasures as the Breslers got for theirs. As a combination of strong aesthetic warmth, and artistic brilliance, it is hard to think of a collection like this. What a pleasure! (Also, as a quite unrelated matter, I note that I believe one of the curators, Mr. Bell, has also made inroads into the growing trend of scholarship investigating the material culture of Freemasonry).
