An excellent self-watering pot for my smaller orchids with an extra perk
Even though these are listed as 'XL' they are smallish to me as the inner pot is only 4in by 3.5in deep. Those inner pots fit the outer pot well and have excellent ventilation slits as well. The 'perk' is that a 5in net pot with a small edge will fit the outer pot as well with plenty of room for the resevoir as well. The true negative the the use of cotton as the self-watering wick. Because it is organic, it will decompose and attract mold and other 'badness' to the plant. This problem is easily worked around by using a strip of microfiber cloth which is both extremely wicking and nonorganic. If these pots woukd have come with an inch-wide strip of microfiber cloth instead of the rope-like cotton wick I would have said they were perfect. I have purchased 3 sets and may need more in the future.

It's Good
I decided I wanted to stop paying $3+ dollars for a small bunch of fresh herbs at the grocery store so I ordered some various herb seeds and these pots to start my own windowsill herb garden. They arrived very quickly and in good shape. I got six white plastic pots, 6 black plastic inserts (where you actually put the soil and plant and 6 pieces of cotton (I assume) wick that fits in the two holes in the bottom of the black insert. I am excited to try growing my own herbs and these are exactly what I wanted. I feel like they are a great value for what you get.

My secret for establishing a healthy root system
I can't say enough good things about these pots. They are easy to assemble. They work like a dream. Every plant i put in these thrives and develops a robust root system for me to transplant to a bigger pot. They work best for young plants you are trying to establish, or small plants that like water which you don't have time for. The soil stays the perfect pH, but plenty of air to keep bacteria and fungus from killing your plants. I use these as a sort of "preschool" home for my baby plants which I have water-propagated or seedlings that need lots of humidity. If you use these pots before planting your young plants, they grow a strong root system. This reduces shock on the plant when re-potting. Re-potting is a breeze- they just slide right out, no broken roots. The white is so classy! Great pots to rehab dried out plants too. It offers this unique method of drenching the plant in hydration while safely aerating the soil and roots. Not to mention plants LOVE to be watered from below- natural system they are use to.CONS: These are 4" pots. The outer shell is 6 inches, and there is a 2 inch gap from the walls, so don't plan to re-pot a 6-inch plant in here. It's too small. You can reduce the soil ball to fit, if you have a plant in rehab. Works great for that. Also, they don't snap closed. So, the black holder in the middle tends to wobble if you hold it wrong. It's really not that big of a deal though because you get use to how to securely pick them up. It needs water replaced once a week or so, therefore it sorta needs to come off easily and check health of the plant.

Great for busy lifestyle!
I have a busy life and my apartment has limited space. These planters work great for my needs and my herb garden I wanted to have. Everything came as described and I just check from time to time to make sure they have water. It’s pretty easy and nice because I’ve been known to either over-water or forget. Very pleased and likely will be purchasing more as my herb garden grows!****update: 7/7/19****I ended up purchasing the x-large (which I think should just be called a “large” size —so be careful to check the dimensions before purchasing. Sometimes the black top slides off the center but it’s easy to put on. The water sometimes gets dirt in it, but you can easily pick up the black part that holds the plant and clean out the white base. I water the plants maybe once a week or whenever I have extra water from watering my other plants. Still content with these. Would only recommend for herbs as the x-large is not deep enough for many veggie plants.
