Keeping Watch Over London
This spiffy little entry in the Sherlock Holmes franchise starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, who will forever be Holmes and Watson to moviegoers the world over, has a good cast and story and loads of atmosphere that make it one of the best in the series.London is being terrorized by a Jack the Ripper type killer preying upon young women; murdering then mutilating them by severing the right forefinger from each victim. Scotland Yard is at a loss to find the killer or prevent the murders from continuing. It is time to call in the one man who may be able to put an end to the terror, Sherlock Holmes.A chance encounter at Pembroke House where Holmes sees an attractive woman named Lydia (Hillary Brooke) will be the key to what's really behind the slayings, which as Holmes explains to his old pal Watson, may involve something far more sinister than plain old murder. Every Holmes devotee knows only one mind could devise something more sinister than murder, but wasn't Moriarity hanged in Montividio? This fast paced and exciting entry is a lot of fun for Rathbone and Bruce fans as the two have some fine moments together. The story is full of dark alleys and London fog. The morgue, hypnotism, and a deadly confrontation between Holmes and his long-time "acquaintance," Professor Moriarity, on a dangerously narrow ledge overlooking London, make this one a fine Holmes' tale well-told.Henry Daniel is the definitive Moriarity and Hillary Brooke adds flavor in this story of blackmail and murder, all tied to hypnotism. Paul Cavanagh is good as Sir George Fenwick, who awakes one morning after a date with Lydia with no memory of where he's been. His only clue is a bloody finger in his pocket and the newsboy's chant outside his window about the latest victim.Eve Amber has a small but nice role as Sir George's daughter Maude, who comes to Holmes worried about her father. Holmes suspects she has reason to worry and those suspicions are proven valid when her father's body is discovered by Holmes and Watson, clutching a matchbook from Pembrose House. There are two confrontations between Holmes and Moriarity in this one for us to enjoy. Also included in the jam-packed 68 minutes is a niftily, and quite humorously thwarted, assination attempt on Holmes' life. Watson and an army sniper named Williams may be easy fodder for hypnotism, but is Holmes impervious to Lydia's charms? This one is great fun and gets the highest rating for being a fine and entertaining "B" entry for Holmes' fans to enjoy.

Better than expected given the Amazon and Rotten Tomatoes reviews
Even though I've heard of Basil Rathbone and his portrayal of the celebrated Sherlock Holmes, I had not viewed his Sherlock Holmes mysteries before. I thought this was an excellent film if you are into classic cinema, and I highly recommend viewing it.

QUINTESSENTIAL SHERLOCK HOLMES...
I am a fan of Sherlock Holmes movies, particularly those starring the elegantly urbane Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and the comedic Nigel Bruce as his befuddled sidekick, Dr. Watson. In this film, someone is killing women in London and chopping off their forefinger. Scotland Yard is at an impasse in the investigation until Sherlock Holmes becomes involved. The who and why leads to an old nemesis and to a mysterious beautiful woman, played with sangfroid coolness by Lana Turner look alike Hillary Brooke, who is ostensibly the woman in green.I recently viewed the restored and colorized version of this black and white film on Amazon Prime. While theimages were sharp and crisp, in the colorization process some idiot unfortunately chose to make her the woman in blue. Still, this gaffe is not sufficient to take away the enjoyment of watching this film, which is sure to please fans of Sherlock Holmes.

Plenty of action!
Sherlock Holmes has undergone so many metamorphoses from Jeremy Brett to Benedict Cumberbatch and yet when I think of Holmes' face as it was meant to be, I picture Basil Rathbone. And Doctor Watson who was no way a bumbling fool in the Canon, nevertheless with Nigel Bruce portraying him goes with Rathbone like a horse and carriage. They are satisfying. The game is afoot and beautiful women are being murdered around London and their right index fingers are cut off and mailed to...we won't give more away but we have a sinister plot, a beautiful femme fatale, hypnotism, blackmail, and Professor Moriarty who keeps popping up from the dead like the true Phoenix he is. Henry Daniell with his perpetual disdainful scowl is the perfect Moriarty. (He was the perfect Mr. Brocklehurst, too, in "Jane Eyre", remember)? Henry Daniell smiling would really be an event and we've never seen him even close to looking jocular. Be sure "The Woman in Green" is in your Holmes stable if it is not there already. The quality of the Amazon Instant Movie is very good.It is only 69 minutes long, alas, but you'll enjoy this visit to Baker Street!

The Best Holmes In Excellent Form
I really think Holmes is best played by Basil Rathbone and Watson by Nigel Bruce. They make the characters as rich as the novels. It's good when Holmes faces off with Moriarty and this is all Holmes vs. Moriarty with a solid and cold femme fatale for a great bridge. Bruce supplies his usual comic relief amid his ultimate assistience. Sherlock Holmes done total justice on the screen. Very entertaining.

The Most Atmospheric of the Series
I've watched this movie several times and have come to the conclusion that it's highly underrated. It has a more "serious" tone to it than many of the more light-hearted entries in the famous series. The Scotland Yard detective and Dr. Watson seem more of a help than a hinderence which is often the case. The cast of characters are wonderful and well acted. The film has a wonderful "film noir" atmosphere with its dark shadows and tilted camera angles that many of the other features lack. It never thought I would say something like this as I'm not a fan of colorization, but the film is beautiful colorized. It gives the move a patina of an old, faded postcard. Of course, it looks great in black and white as well. I like the fact that the action takes place all in London and not in Washington, Quebec or some other far off local. Though it is set in the modern era the film has the look and feel of an earlier time. Definately one of the best of the series!

Oribit Media less than optimal
Sorry to agree with my colleague: I love the stories of Sherlock Holmes, but Orbit Media did not do a good job. The sound is often lousy, and as a foreign speaker at times hardly understandable, and the image quality is alike. All scratches and change marks preserved, something we dont like to see. Having worked in France and Germany I can say that there are French and German dubbed versions are available. They are missing on the CD, as a version for the HOH subtitles, which are particularly helpfull for non-native speakers.Poor job by Orbit Media but great stories any way.

WRONG FORMAT
This doesn't play on a North American DVD player. I had to watch it on a computer which is not entirely satisfactory.
