Batteries
This is the second one I purchased from the same company. The first one came with batteries that were operational and did not need replacing. The second one had a warning sound that indicated that the batteries needed to be replaced. Manufacturer should have placed a piece of plastic film between the batteries and contact point. This film would not create any accidental discharges and can only be activated by new user.

FOUR lines of Defense for my E-Bike!
I love this thing! I bought the bright reminder cord to give it yet another level of protection. First, the bright cord is a visual means to let someone know the hub is locked. If they move the bike, the alarm beeps, warning that person. Thirdly, if they do it again, it has a very annoying shrill alarm that is different sound that say a car alarm, so you can identify it as your bike. And lastly, the drum is locked so they can't roll it away. Short of picking the thing up while the alarm is going off and heaving a large 50lb Ebike into a truck bed, the bike won't be going anywhere. I do use the heavy duty chain lock on it as well if I will be out of earshot, but if running into the coffeeshop or something, I don't have to find something to lock it to. Very convenient. And you don't need the key to set the alarm, just reach down and push the button on the drum and done. The key is only for opening it. Heavy duty. Nothing I don't love about this lock!

Good bang for your buck
Unit has some heft and gives the impression of sturdiness. Fits on my 1300 Vstar with no issues. Alarm is quite shrill and should be a good deterrent. If you are shopping, you will see many similar units will come with a 6 foot cable to loop onto your bars to act as a reminder to unlock your bike. This unit does not.

Works well enough
Seems to work pretty good. Very sensitive to movement if you have a cover on it in the wind (duh). Removable can be irritating as lock mechanism is sometimes a bit 'sticky' and won't release the key right away, which can trigger the alarm.
