The Urban Treasure Hunter: A Practical Handbook for Beginners

one of my favourite metal detecting books
I used to borrow this book from the library. Finally I decided to buy my own copy. I love this book. I find that the author is really daring to go metal detecting in public places such as city parks in NYC. He has found so many neat and valuable artifacts and coins. This book also covers arrow heads, bottles, etc.

I Couldn't Put This Book Down
Chaplan writes such an engrossing book, that it's hard to put down. Being in one of the NY city boroughs, I appreciated some urban perspective although the information and tips can apply anywhere. The only drawback however, through no fault of its own, is the recent changes to treasure hunting in city parks. The new restrictions don't allow for a lot of the tips provided and renders some of the advice as no longer do-able. In fact, NYC has managed to pretty much outlaw MDing and treasure hunting without saying so, just from reading their absurd overlapping policies -- such as no metal detecting within 25 feet of a tree's drip line, and no metal detecting on any open sports field. So what's left? Nothing of course. This book was published before these punitive newer rules however, and should you live in an area where bureaucrats don't micromanage one's ability to metal detect, then this is a most excellent book for learning about uncovering all kinds of treasures. The photo section on the different types of arrow heads was top-notch as well.

OK book.
We are taught that anything can be found anywhere. True, but a lot of tips are not really feasible for many, like digging through houses that are being torn down, etc. Some good tips on using metal detectors though. Not a bad book, but don't expect to become rich with it.

Written by a Smart Guy
I got this book for my Brother as a gift. He was excited enough about it to call me to share what he learned from it. He had nothing but praise for the author. I read the first chapter myself and can tell this was written by someone with brains. He has a college education in anthropology so applies a lot of his knowledge using a scientific approach to treasure hunting. This is not just some book written by a laymen weekend treasure hunter with a metal detector although most of his writing focuses on the use of a metal detector. He shares a lot of good ideas of where and when to look for treasure and gets you thinking in directions you normally may not think of yourself. His interest and background in cultural anthropology clearly resonates in his writing which makes the reading more interesting than just about finding old coins and gold. This is a good book.
