Q: Is the hook detachable?

no the hook is not detachable at all. but there is is a snap ring that you tie too. or clip on a leader to it..

Q: Looking to buy this for my son, what size or oz for bass? He likes to freshwater fish for bass. Something like a 5-8lbs.

1/4, 3/8, or 1/2oz all work, but temp, color of water, weather, and depth, will all change what bass will want. Much like color, you have to give them what they want, and if fishing shallow, I don't like the big splash that might spook the fish, but if going deep, you want the bait to get there fast, so go heavy on that deep fish. I use the very light 1/8oz and have caught some over 5lbs, but the bait doesn't hold up to the big fish, not the same way built on the light one.

Q: Is there a keeper on the hook for trailers?

No, and I have never needed one, but just get a piece of tubing and make your own keeper, if you feel the need for one.
