A great cookbook
Living in Savannah, I’ve been to Back in the Day Bakery, and this cookbook is wonderful! I live that I can recreate or bake these wonderful recipes when I can’t get downtown!

A trip to remember
I bought a Southern Living Magazine with a cupcake recipe from Back in the Day Bakery and loved how it turned out (and so did my family). So I looked up online to see if I can get more recipes on their website. When I discovered that they were publishing a cookbook in Mar 2012, I immediately ordered a copy on Amazon. I received my copy late in March with no problems. I never been so excited to read a cookbook, I read it like it was a novel. I read each page and was in wonder with all the recipes and pictures. I was smiling at my husband while I have the cookbook open to a page with a picture of a lovely coconut cake. I told him "Wouldn't be great if we can go to Back in the Day Bakery and have this cake?" (pointing to the coconut cake). My husband replied and said "Let's go! Where is it?" We do not live no where close to the bakery, in fact we live hundreds of miles away. But my husband got online and checked on flights. Because my husband works for an Airline company, he and I have flying benefits to fly anywhere on standby for free. We picked a date that week and he ensured me that the flight to Savannah was available and crazy enough we got on the plane, landed in Savannah airport, took a taxi and found the bakery. When we entered the bakery I felt like I stepped into the cookbook. The decor and shelf was exactly as the pictures on the book's cover. We approached the display counter filled with cupcakes and scones and bread pudding and cookies and brownies. My eyes just lit up. I had asked the young lady behind the counter who took our order if she wouldn't mind asking if Mr. and Mrs. Day to come out and sign my cookbook (yes I took my cookbook with me). Cheryl was nice enough to come out of the kitchen a few minutes later to talk to us. She was so tickled that we flew out to visit her bakery. What a lovely lady. She was very nice to sign my book and take a picture with me. Little did I know that I became her fan that day? After we got home I was so inspired by my visit to the bakery, that I made 3 recipes from the book. The Sno ball, chocolate cake and Bourbon Bread Pudding and boy oh boy were they delicious! The recipes were very easy to follow even though the Sno Ball had several steps to make but man! was it worth it. I made the Bourbon Bread Pudding again for Easter Brunch and my family asked for seconds after seconds. I am looking forward to this weekend to bake more recipes. Cheryl and Griffith Day, if you ever get to read my review, just wanted to say thank you for sharing this beautiful cookbook and sharing your recipes so that I may relive my visit to your bakery and able to bake delicious baked goods in my own kitchen. Hope to see you both more often for I'm sure this book will make you famous.

Delicious recipes. Most of the time.
I have intentionally waited to write this review until I tried numerous recipes from the book. So far, I have made bacon jam empanadas, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate dipped coconut macaroons, buttermilk cornmeal pancakes, pecan sandras, and sugar cookie tarts. This book has yielded mostly delicious results , but some (few) recipes turn out nothing like the picture and are disappointing. Don't expect your recipes to look like the beautiful pictures featured, unless you are a skilled home baker. I consider myself to be an intermediate/advanced baker and can tell you these recipes are DELICIOUS, but not beautiful. I was disappointed with the macaroons and felt that the egg white to coconut ratio was too high. The end result for many of the macaroons were runny and slightly bitter. Dipping them in chocolate was a MUST for the flavor profile to be on-point. I took a large container of them to a holiday party and they were a hit. The bacon jam empanadas were absolutely delicious. However, the egg wash consisted of egg yolk and water. Next time I make these, they will consist of whole egg and water, since the original end result was a very yellow and thick outer coating. I found myself having to substitute a few ingredients (like "Kentucky" Bourbon) since I am not one to go on an elaborate search for a single ingredient. I ended up substituting the bourbon for real vanilla (you know, the one with 20% alcohol content!) The cornmeal pancakes were exceptional. They'll make you want to throw away your boxed pancake mix for good! And I made my buttermilk from scratch (1 cup milk to 1 tbsp vinegar or lemon juice). The chocolate chip cookies were okay. From previous reviews, people made it seem like they were something spectacular. After I made these, I realized my own recipe was more favorable. But regardless of my hit-and-miss experiences with this cookbook, I have a strange inclination to choose this book for all my baking needs, rather than another source. It's a great reference guide. If you are a beginning baker and wish to become more advanced, I highly recommend this book.

i love them, the back inthe day bakery cookbook is ...
firstly let me preface thsi by saying i have many many many cookbooks, i love them, the back inthe day bakery cookbook is exactly as you would imagine if you had grown up in america in the 40's or 50's, however i didnt i grew up in ireland in the 80's... there unfortunatly isnt a great description of the origin or the basic of the recipies but they are easy to follow and the pictures are inspiring.warning the recipies are in american measures which can be a challange to convert but the recipies work and if you have some americans to visit they will appriciate the effort.

Charming!
A cook book which makes me want to try every recipe in it! The book is full of lovely glossy snaps of all the delicious cakes, breads and other baked goodies from this American bakery and Cheryl and Griffith come across as so charming, that you wish this bakery was nearby!Easy to follow recipes, although some of the US ingredients are harder to source, but a quick search on the internet led me to where to buy, or what to substitute with. The Hummingbird Cake I baked at the weekend was the best I have ever tasted! Moist, light and delicious and the icing so so sweet. Can't wait to try all the recipes!

Back In The Day Cookbook
This is a lovely little retro cookbook. I have tried a few of the recipes and have been pleased with all of them. There is a good selection of sweet and savoury and nothing so far was too difficult to make. I would recommend this book to any enthusiastic bakers.

Back in the day cookbook
Very nice book, which is well presented. Wish it had one or two of the more basic everyday recipes in it though.
