Bridge for Complete Beginners

An excellent, if slightly random, guide to bidding - the play section is less clear
This book is easy to read: in particular, the author is exceptionally good at explaining the logic behind the Acol bidding system. His examples are clear and well set out. Some of his chapter lay-out does seem haphazard, especially the chapter on opening and responding to one of a suit; but it is a complex subject with many permutations, and his approach is probably as good as any other, making up in chattiness and narrative ability for the slightly random structure. His explanations of play strategies appear to be aimed at a somewhat more advanced audience: I myself could not understand what he was talking about until I had played quite a bit. If these chapters were expanded to make them more accessible to beginners, they would add greatly to the value of the book as a whole. One particular point to note: every single paragraph in the book has something useful in it, which is seldom repeated elsewhere. It is worth reading this book several times, as each time you will notice material which did not seem so important before.

Great Book
This is an excellent book for all people starting out on Bridge and also the ones who need to go over the basics again or haven't played for some years. It's all set out very clearly with chapters divided into topics and lots of examples given to illustrate the points made. And also questions throughout for you to test yourself to make sure you have understood. Highly recommended.

One of the best for beginners
Very clear and understandable introduction to modern Acol as used today in the UK. Takes you far enough to be able to play socially with anyone, but if you want to win competitions you should get the other books in the series.

A good introduction
This book is a good revision for those who are coming back to the game like my self . Bridge requires you get to grip with key concepts and a few semantics before you really get to start to understand it . This book is pretty good at that , but as I found out recently when teaching a few new people to the game , it is best to play and learn the principals in practice .
