Torture chamber?! Really?!!
This book has cute characters and some of it is very funny but it is completely inappropriate for young children. It has a torture chamber scene - not a concept I want to explain to my seven year old - and other quite violent scenes. The editor/publisher should have cut these. Also the spelling mistakes throughout this and other Pilkey books are teaching my child to use incorrect spellings, I have noticed his spelling is much worse since reading the Dogman and Captain Underpants series.Won’t buy anything more from this inappropriate and irresponsible author which is a shame because the plots of the stories are pretty funny. I’m so annoyed I think I’ll send this back for a refund.

Culturally insensitive and inappropriate content
I found this book to be inappropriate for children. It features a tribal chief with a name that clearly plays into the idea that Black people are stupid and can't even remember their own names. This is followed closely by a joke about gorillas, which are often signifiers for Black people in so called "jokes". Later, a Chinese family enters the story. The lead of the family is a Kung Fu master called Master Wong, and all of the Chinese characters have lines instead of eyes. Master Wong is as you would have come to expect from this book - speaks gramatically incorrect English and is a bit stupid. I found the whole book distasteful and offensive. I had to have extensive conversations with my 7yo as to why we couldn't finish the book. I'm usually a fan of Dav Pilkey but this one steps over the line into culturally insensitive and offensive.

Good and bad points
Bought this book as we couldn't borrow it from the library - all the copies are either years overdue or withdrawn - presumably because, I've since learnt, the book has a reputation for 'passive racism'.The book has good points and bad points. It is styled as if it is written by a child and so is littered with spelling errors. My favourite thing about the Captain underpants books is that the plots are childish but the language is rich and challenging meaning my son enjoys reading the books and his vocabulary expands. I'm not a fan of the vocabulary in this book. Before the story there is a disclaimer that dinosaurs and cavemen didn't co-exist. Then the story, featuring cavemen and dinosaurs, begins... The plot is childish and fun. I was surprised that an allegation of racism had been levelled against the book - feels wholly unjustified?I wouldn't particularly seek this book out because of the spellings but it seems a shame it has been 'cancelled'.

Kids hated it
I bought this because my kids absolutely love the dogman and captain underpants book. However to my suprise they hated this. Didn't even want to finish the book. No idea why. Maybe the lack of colour but that's just a guess. They said it was weird and boring.
