Lacks vitality.
Dull, pedestrian writing is, I guess, appropriate for a dull, pedestrian designer (by her own admission, Edith was no great shakes as a designer). As other reviewers and the book itself points out, Edith lied, stole designs from famous couturiers, claimed credit for other employees' work, etc. I could put up with the boring writing if the author only took on the real task of revealing the woman behind all the fraudulence. WHY did she do these things? Where, when and why did she develop into such a ruthless politician? Ordinarily, I'm against a biographer taking on the role of psychologist, but Edith is definitely a case that cries out for analysis, and that's what the book really lacks.

Not An Autobiography
.....but still good. How she climbed the ladder of success in a world of male dominated designers and some great quotes as well. She had the fashion eye for enhancing what suited a womans shape and appearance. We think of Edith Head as costumer to the Hollywood epics, but she was much more than that. Thoroughly researched.

Extremely well written, great reference and history.
I liked the informative, descriptive, and knowledgeable history provided. I love movies, and how wardrobe design contributes to the end result. Edith Head is the epitome of style and contribution to many memorable classics. The woman herself is interesting!

It really was Edith Head's Hollywood
The most complete biography you'll find about one of the most influential costume designers of the Hollywood golden era. This book pretty much tells you everything you're likely to want to know about Edith Head, punctuated by contributions from the woman herself.

Ahead Of Her Time...
Edith Head is legendary in Hollywood History and this book on her life and work is long overdue. Well written and researched, and with plenty of photo's it examines how she functioned and shaped future stars and the way the represented and managed their image.. It's clear she had clear ideas about myth making, she understood the industry, and gave it what it wanted - without compromising her own artistic vision and integrity . The skill of Edith was that she also mythologized herself as well as the actors she worked with. She's as legendary as Lucile Ball and crucial to the history of Hollywood. When actors didn't know what they wanted- she did.

Interesting for any 'Golden Age of Hollywood' fans.
I have lots of biographies about film stars from the 'golden age' of Hollywood and I love to read credits at the end of their movies. On many credits I see 'Costume - Edith Head' - so I wanted to know her story. This book covers it all. And it gives little insights into the stars she dressed during her long career of over a thousand movies,I enjoyed it. It isn't sycophantic, it gives a fair account, I think.
