496962 80mm X 130mm Hand Sanding Block

I recently purchased the Festool 496962, and it has significantly enhanced my woodworking projects. The precision and quality of this tool are outstanding, making it an essential addition to my workshop. The sander is incredibly easy to use, with intuitive controls and a robust design that ensures durability. This is a hard plastic sanding block with hook and loop fasteners for the sandpaper. I questioned why I would pay so much for a non-powered sanding device - until I used it. It fits nicely on the Festool 27mm dust extractor hose but you must be careful to 'pop' the block into the hose completely to get a tight fit that does not come loose (it doesn't, in spite of some other reviews here). It removes almost all of the sanding dust, I only see a few stray particles drifting away, thus keeping the work surface clean so you can see what you are doing. I've used it for rough 50 and 80 grit papers all the way up to 600 grit when applying fine finishes. The control it gives you is a big plus. The only negative I can see is that the pad cannot be changed. If you mess it up you'll have to buy a whole new block. I'm sure the green logo makes this cost 63 bucks when it should be around 25. Still, it is worth it go me and I"ll buy another when the time comes.

So as most of you looking to purchase this know, Festool is the Bombdiggedy of tool manufacturers. I say they are the Bently of the power tool market. Their products are all F-You expensive, but I cannot help it they are so well made and perform so well all I do is wait out my days until I can afford, well justify rather, buying another of their products. Thats why I'm writing this review to sauy I'm a little perplexed that they dint get this product as perfectly as their others. The problem with this device is that if you get at all agressive with this sander as you are using it, it will pop off the extractor hose. The first time it happened I was taken aback. How could this be, this is a FESTOOL product, it's got to be perfect. That must have been me. So then when it kept happening again and again, I began to see that maybe in fact it is the product. Now when I do use it, I have to be extra careful to not manhandle it and it will stay on. Just was surprised, as the mere nature of our business is typically done with some force, but not in the case of this sander. Gentle as she goes.

I got this primarily for sanding drywall with my Festool Midi vacuum and it works well! Fits the same abrasives as my RTS400 sander. It doesn’t feel as high quality as I would’ve expected from Festool, it feels like hard plastic. I don’t think anything can really break on it, but I am concerned that eventually the interface pad will wear and I don’t think it can be replaced. I would’ve loved to see an option to replace the interface pad like there is on the powered sanders. Dust control with drywall is great. You will still want a corner sander for inside corners though.

Works sweet! You have to use half power or less on the Festool dust collector. A normal shop vac will need a rheostat

This sanding block is utterly amazing. I’ve been a carpenter and woodworker for over 50 years, and am not easily impressed. This is only a sanding block, and really only suited for small jobs, but when attached to my Milwaukee M18 vac not one molecule of drywall dust escaped. The job I tried it on was only about 30 square feet of Sanding, but I am still in disbelief over how well it works. I was so impressed I immediately bought a spare while Amazon had a sale.

To use effectively reduce the suction power on your VAC "till you can move the sanding block freely. Otherwise it has a great beat and you can dance to it.

This block seemed like a great idea, it is sized to fit Festool 80x133 paper and is equipped with a vacuum port. It's expensive, and unlike many Festool products, it's not money well spent. After less than six months, the hook and loop attachment for the abrasive is almost completely separated from the backing pad. There are no replacement pads. The dust extraction is decent -- maybe too good, unless you reduce the vacuum the block "sticks" to the work. There is a port on the block that reduces that vacuum, but it is unpleasantly loud. If your dust extractor can do it, you'll probably be happier by reducing the vacuum there. All in all, not a good value for the money.

Why did you choose this product over others?: Comfortable and easy to use. Sandpaper sticks well and does not move. Good buy.

In a weak moment I splashed out on another FESTOOL thinking ‘I don’t really need this’ - more so given the cost of FESTOOL. But I t has already earned its keep. I have used it for flattening poly filler sets prior to decorating. It connects to a Miele vacuum (so you don’t have to buy a FESTOOL dust extractor) and there has been no dust when using this, a huge plus when decorating. Use Mirka abranet for best results with this hand sander.

Der Schleifklotz macht seine Arbeit. Als Anwender musste ich die Saugleistung meines Industriestaubsaugers drosseln. Der Anschluss an meinen original Festool Saugschlauch war etwas schwierig, daher nur vier Sterne.

Hand sanding without the dust makes it’s so much easier and neater. It’s comfortable in the hands and attaching to a dust extractor is a must
