Introducing Liberation Theology

Exceedingly Dry
This book dwells on the justification of Liberation Theology within the framework of the Catholic Church. The three levels of the theology are explained, and justified by drawing within the history of Catholic dogma. I also would have liked this book to contain some actual experiences, some historical references to the personalities involved, but this is not that kind of book. The author is exacting to demonstrate to the reader the steps involved in forming a new Theology. The topics and important points throughout the book are very well laid out usually in enumerated paragraphs. At times it is like reading an outline and a reader may have trouble staying focused. The book did an admirable job Introducing Liberation Theology per the title. As for maintaining reader interest, it is very dry. It was an eyeopener to see the steps involved in attempting to justify a new Theology The author's style is "to the point". I chose this book because the author is credited with being one of the founders of Liberation Theology.

Missing the personal experience
The Boff brothers, Leonardo and Clodovis, have written a scholarly text suitable for the theology student. Their compendium outlines liberation theology by clearly defining the function, structure, themes, and history with adequate explanations of theological terms that would otherwise baffle the non-indoctrinated. This book is written for the reader who has an interest in knowing the socio-analytical, hermeneutical, and practical mediations. Get the message? If the purpose of the book is to inform, then it is adequate. But it will not win any advocates for the liberation theology movement. With the exception of the opening pages which describe the desperation of the poor with two heart rending experiences, this book is dry tinder in search of burning embers of the human element. The Boffs have many experiences with the poor, the oppressed, and the marginalized that could have brought to life the conceptual and the abstract.

Enlightening
This was an interesting read that shed light on many aspects of liberation theology. I enjoyed reading it, and got a nice overview of the topic. I was hoping for a bit more material on the international presence of this movement, which is why I gave 4 stars. I Highly encourage this book.

Intro to Leonardo Boff
Great book to introduce people to teachings of Liberation Theology. Conservatives don't like it, but since I was born in a Third World country, I understood well the bases of the ideology.

Leonardo Boff does a great job in this book. It is a very helpful introduction to Liberation Theology. This book helped me a lot for a class presentation about Boff.

Required reading to understand the basics of Liberation Theology, but beware layout
I'm not very good at this kind of thing, but I had to for this book. The content is lucid and understandable, making liberation theology available to the average reader, with a religious base, clearly and concisely. Placing it in it's authentic historical and economic position. This book should be read BEFORE A Theology of Liberation by Gustavo Gutierrez, which is heavily academic and simply inaccessible to the average religious reader. This book at least makes a case for liberation theology clearly and thoughtfully priming the reader to understand the basics of the three types in action and in thought. Why only three stars? The layout. The book jumps from page 68 to page 77, then 84 to 77, 92 to 85, and ends abruptly on page 92 again, mid-sentence. Orbis Publishing should be ashamed of themselves.

A great summise of the theology, narratively written.
Easy enough to understand. I haven't looked in depth on the subject so not sure how much it covers, but I think it grasps the basics of liberation theology and its heart and motivation. Would definitely recommend it as a starting point.

A good read and a good guide.
Very good indeed. Simple prose but it really gets to the point. It does manage some depth and it gives a very good overview of Liberation Theology at the time of writing.

A much needed book.
Now that things are opening up with Pope Francis it is important to know about Liberation Theology. It seems to be one of a series but no indication of titles of other books
