Product Description First in the 'Phantasm' series. Shortly after losing his parents, teenager Mike (Michael Baldwin) grows suspicious of a tall man (Angus Scrimm) he sees lifting a coffin single-handed at the local graveyard, and decides to investigate. It turns out that the funeral parlour is being used as an assembly line for zombie slaves, and it is left to Mike, with the aid of his brother Jody (Bill Thornburg) and ice cream man Reggie (Reggie Bannister), to stop them. .co.uk Review Jody is the kind of guy that every 1970s teen looked up to. He's in his early 20s, has a cool car, splendid 1970s hair, a leather jacket, plays guitar and (naturally) snags all the girls. His little brother, Mike, in particular, admires him and emulates him at every turn. Things start to go astray, however, when the two brothers and their friend Reggie attend a funeral for a friend. Mike notices a tall man working at the funeral home; in the course of his snooping, he sees the tall man put a loaded coffin into the back of a hearse as easily as if it was a shoebox. Jody doesn't believe his little brother's stories, though, until he brings home the tall man's severed finger, still wriggling in what appears to be French's mustard. From there, the film picks up a terrific momentum that doesn't let up until the sequel-ripe twist ending.Phantasm was one of the first horror movies to break the unspoken rule that victims were supposed to scream, fall down and cower until they were killed. Instead, Mike and Jody are resourceful and smart, aggressively pursuing the evil inside the funeral home with a shotgun and Colt pistol. Furthermore, the script has a great deal of character development, especially in the relationship between the two brothers. The film even has a surprisingly glossy look, despite its low-budget origins, and little outright gore (except for the infamous steel spheres that drill into victims' heads). This drive-in favourite was a big success at the time of its release, and spawned three sequels. Little wonder; it includes an inventive story, likeable characters, a runaway pace and, of course, evil dwarves cloaked in Army blankets. The end result is one of the better horror films of the late 1970s. Hot-rod fans take note: Jody drives a Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda, the pinnacle of 1960s muscle cars, rounding out his status as a Cool Guy. --Jerry Renshaw

A one-of-a-kind classic
I first saw this in 1981, aged 11. This was in a working man's club in Liverpool. There were people drinking, talking, shouting, laughing and playing snooker, but my attention was captured entirely by the events unfolding on the small, wall-mounted television. There's little point going into any detail about a film released in 1979. If you haven't seen it and you're a horror fan, you'll almost certainly know a fair amount about it. For me, what lifts this up above anything I've seen before or since is it's sheer inventiveness. Phantasm isn't spun from existing threads. It is its own mythology. In a landscape of remakes and reboots and 'fresh takes' on zombies, vampires, werewolves, haunted houses etc, Phantasm stands alone.

Aged surpringly well
Saw this when it was new and though it had memorable moments it seemed awful disjointed rubbish. Rewatching it now, makes far more sense and is actually a very enjoyable late 70s horror adventure film, sits well alongside John Carpenter films of the same era.

Original
The fact that this is a unknown film, I like the price of £ 4.99 good deal.

Ah the memories!!
Ah the memories!! I remember this film scared the daylights out of me when I was a kid, mainly the unnerving music and the sense of claustrophobia you get right through the film. Just a fascinating as watching this again was reading the Amazon trivia about the film that goes along side it - really interesting to know more about the actors and their talents (especially musical). well recommended but probably as a nostalgia trip rather than quality film making :-)

The Tall Man
Teenager Mike Baldwin takes on the evil Tall Man, an alien who wants to harvest the human race. It looks cheap and is low budget, starts off slow but builds into a very tense and creepy and atmospheric film with an excellent very sinister performance from Angus Scrimm as the film's villain, The Tall Man. Good performances from the rest of the cast too. 4 sequels followed this film, a horror classic.

Great packaging.
Do like silver balls? Do you like Anyus Scrimm screaming booooooooooyyyyt in a mausoleum. Who the heck doesn’t. This movie still holds up over time. This steelbook is fantastic. Comes with an incredible print of the film and its steel. I want it to come alive and turn into a sphere and drill my head open.

Phantasm

70's classic retored in 4k thanks to JJ Abrams. Still as entertaining, hilarious and horrifying as it was the first time only better.
