Fame and Glory in Freedom, Georgia

This book was a delight to read.
The narrator of this book is a 6th grade girl, so the vocabulary is written from her perspective. It is a touching story that even an adult can relate to and I highly recommend it for any middle-elementary student to read. This book will be donated to St. Joseph’s School in Chehalis, WA.

Another winner by Barbara O’Connor
I read Wish first and loved it. Now I read every book by this author that I can get my hands on. I read them with my grandkids, and it’s a wonderful experience each time.

my new favorite author
Barbara O'Connor is my new favorite author! She also wrote the fantastic How to Steal a Dog. This book is just as good. Strong voice, fast read, I couldn't put it down. Main character, Bird, is looking for a best friend. She finds a boy she wants as a friend and doesn't give up. Full of fun, quirky characters you'll just love. O'Connor's use of quick, specific details does well to establish the settings. And the characters will make you wish you could be invited for dinner at Miss Delphine's too.

This Gal's Got Grit (with the help of her friends)
Barbara O'Conner doesn't it again! Wow, her characters come alive and take the reader to Freedom, Georgia! Miss Delphine is as precious and Howard in Wish. What a wonderful read about extending the hand of friendship and persistence!

I'm so happy that my daughter (8) is finally old enough that we can enjoy reading a book together. I started reading the book just to get a sense of what she's reading these days, and I was drawn in. It's a beautiful coming-of-age book that perfectly illustrates growing up lonely and awkward in the American South.

Surprisingly good
I bought this book for my daughter (an advanced 10-year-old reader) because it was required reading. I was without any books of my own one day with a long wait, so I picked it up and started reading. It was a surprisingly good read. Many of the books on the reading list were overly simple for her, but I thought this one, while not complex in writing style, was a thought invoking book. It was very realistic and would be a good topic of discussion for classes at my daughter's age-level.It's really good to see kids' books that are not all about "Paris Hilton"-esque main characters. There are other real issues going on with our kids that deserve attention while not being overly serious about them and this book does a great job!
