does this have a built in microphone

Yes, It does and if you are not going to make professional movies is great camera with mic for the price.

does it work with ubuntu?

Yes. Ubuntu 12.04 LTS--no install. Works with both skype and hangouts (haven't tried anything else.)

Will this webcam stand by itself on the desktop? My monitor is in an enclosed space and there is no room to mount it on top of the monitor. Thanks

The webcam can fold and then sit on your desktop. Might be better on something higher than the desktop so that you get a straight-on view.

is the installation "plug and play" or do you have to install software for it to work?

It is plug and play but for the best performance, one can download firmware from logitech.http://www.logitech.com/en-us/support/hd-webcam-c310?crid=405&osid=14&bit=64
