Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The freaking original! Brought back so many memories... A bit cheesy watching it at 44 years old, but still loved it!

Yes, you heard right, even after 30 years this movie still stands the test of time. Forget about the cartoony sequels, and the Michael Bay abominations, this is the real deal. Cartoon to movie adaptations usually stink, but not this one, it blends both elements of the comic book and the cartoon (70 percent comic and the other 30 the cartoon), making the perfect balance of light and darkness for a good old fashioned family flick! The costumes, developed by the master puppeteer Jim Henson still look convincingly real, move fluidly, and are able to express themselves with grace unparalleled. Of course what good is all that if you don't have good performances to back it all up? The actors both in suit and voice all deliver, especially with Corey Feldman (a Goonie!) voicing Donatello, Leonardo and Michelangelo were always my favorites, but here I think the show stealer is Raphael, capturing all the sense of teen angst some of us can relate to, played with perfection by Josh Pais both in body and suit (he even commented that the experience in the costume was like riding Grand Central at rush hour with a tin can on your head). Judith Hoag is a great April O'Neal, and so is Elias Koteas as Casey Jones. The story is well written with a great theme that all parents care for their children even when it isn't obvious. The fights are nicely choreographed and in rhythm. All in all, if you're looking for the ideal Ninja Turtles movie, go for this by all means! Parental Advisory: This is a martial arts film so expect violence, though thankfully it's all mild and no blood, the turtles don't kill anyone, just render their foes incapacitated. The only blood you'll see is storywise when Splinter tells his story to one kid, where someone kills another, you'll see it for a brief nanosecond. The language is mild too with Raphael mostly coming from saying D***, plus G*D, and B****in'. The sex is limited to a relationship between April and Casey which includes massaging the shoulders and a passionate kiss. Lastly Shredder could frighten youngsters.

You've got to give Steve Barron credit: any other director might've taken the live-action version of Kevin Eastman's and Peter Laird's creations and produced something more akin to the animated, kid-friendly television show that dominated Saturday morning cartoons for years. Not that this film doesn't have an all-age appeal, but who remembers the original comic book, which was far more gritty and mature than what public television might've allowed? Granted, it's hard to sell the idea of four anthromorphic, ninjutsu-practicing, pizza-loving reptiles to begin with, but once the magic of Jim Henson sets in, a rather simplistic storyline becomes a most refreshing display of kung fu, comedy, and rubber suits that goes beyond expectations. These rubber suits are, of course what sells the movie. Create a costume of a 6-foot turtle that will look good in casual circumstances as well as in stylized combat, and you're close to getting yourself a winner. Master puppetry, coupled with fantastic athletic displays and individual voice-acting cements the four brothers (Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatella) as completely believable characters, immersed in an underground (and, eventually, street-top) battle with a villian - the armoured Shredder - whose spectacle is kept revered throughout the film by an unfaltering darkness to his character, highlighted by real-life crimes of child recruitment. Insert Judith Hoag into her tailor-made role of the reporter, April O'Neil, and wiley Elias Koteas into the character of suave streetfighter Casey Jones, and both of their abilities to react believably to people in costumes, and you've got yourself a winner. Well, maybe not yet. Though one can't expect much out of an action film when it comes to storylines, "Turtles" pulls it off by filling the fast-paced, quick-evented timeline with enough personality to make up for the relative speedy plot, which includes abduction, ambush, capture, retreat, reconciliation, emotional unearthing, return, battle-battle, and victory - all within 90 minutes. While I would have enjoyed certain aspects of the story (mainly, the time of the story spent between scenes) to be elaborated on more than they were, you can only praise the film for managing to plausibly tell the entire storyline of the original comic in the time that it did, by giving necessary focus on the multi-dimensional proportions of key scenes (ex: the reprieve at the farm, the Shredder's corraling of his recruits). In conclusion, the film pulls off the storytelling as well as and maybe even better than most other action films, securely a good mark in the field, but keeping it from being perfect (maybe if the film had been 30 minutes longer...). By keeping everything in context with the original publication, and by throwing in just the right amount of quirky humor, the film achieves most of its potential. A $13 million budget and collaboration with Jim Henson pay off by producing a cult film which sequels have yet to top (as well as a worldwide profit of about $200 million), and which cinematic history has yet to render obsolete. For fans of the franchise, this film is an absolute must-buy. Casuals viewers who find nothing wrong with talking, butt-kicking turtles and nifty kung-fu should likewise find no fault in this film. It's one of the few features that makes up for its shortcomings (the few that there are) with sheer fun and enjoyment. You'd have to be remarkably prim to not give this happy little masterpiece a watch.

Pure nostalgia and I don’t have to pay to stream it

Encantado de poder volver a ver estos clásicos que tantos recuerdos me traen. Varios aspectos a comentar: 1º La carátula que pone Amazon de la peli es la misma que se envía, y lo digo porque señala que las pelis tienen audio en castellano y japonés...hasta dudé en comprármelas sólo por eso. Sin embargo las pelis incluyen en realidad (a pesar de lo que pone la carátula) audio castellano (doblaje original y uno nuevo) y audio en inglés, además de subtítulos en castellano. 2º Dentro de la carátula de cartón (con las especificaciones erróneas) viene la caja de plástico típica de los blurays, en los que te puedes llevar otro sustillo al abrirla, y es que es la caja de la primera parte de Las Tortugas Ninjas, sin que se especifique que incluya Las Tortugas Ninjas II. Pero lo cierto es que al abrir la caja ves los dos discos. Además en esta caja de plástico sí que vienen bien las especificaciones de audio y subtítulos que comenté en el primer punto. Es decir, audios en castellano y subtítulos en español. Lastima que no incluya subtítulos en inglés, que los echo en falta para practicar un poco. 3º Incluye un librito con la descripción de las Tortugas y algunos detalles de los cómics y las series de animación.

La mejor película que han hecho hoy de la historia de las tortugas ninja, apesar de que sea de 1990 no pierde su escencia y no hay persona que no le guste, en versión HD y con elementos extras exclusivos para está versión dónde tendrás olores de las escenas como si estuvieras dentro de ella

Non giudico il film che di per se p un capolavoro (secondo me), ma la qualità del DVD è ottima. p.s. attenzione questa è una versione Inglese e non c'è Italiano, io lo sapevo e l'ho presa apposta.

旧亀三部作の一作目は日本国内でなっかなかDVD化されなくてコレクションに空きがあるままでイライラしていたので助かりました。 普通に再生出来るし、字幕がないだけで簡単な英語だし何度も観てる映画だから理解に関して問題なし。 しかも、ジャケットが秀逸。 そう、こんなふうなシンプルなジャケットがいいんですよ。 DVDのジャケットは映画のオリジナル公開時のポスターをそのまま使っているのがベスト。 変に見たことないようなアーティスト写真を使われても違和感しかない。 そういう意味でも、このDVDはベストです。
