George Wallace: American Populist

Lesher takes Wallace from birth through the end of his political career. Wallace was falsely considered a one-dimensional candidate, i.e focusing exclusively on race. In reality, Wallace was focused on the middle class and down-trodden of both classes and the way in which the establishment had its foot on the working man's neck for decades. Yes, there was some (lots) of racism, but I think this was merely to gain access to media and other forums to make his case for the beauticians, the firemen, the plumbers, et. al. A late in life apology to blacks help ease some feelings. Well written, and without an agenda

I read this book before some 20 yrs ago, enjoyed it then and w/what's happening in the world today, decided to order again! If you're from AL or ever been interested in GCW, the is THE quintessential book to read!

Very interesting book. One of the best and most factural books on the Great George Wallace. We are only know finding the truth.

It is filled with CRT language and is super woke.

This is one of the best books written about George Wallace, and by far, the most objective. While most writers tend to either praise or revile the former Alabama Governer, Mr. Lesher remains objective throughout the book. Not only does this book document Wallace's life and political career, it also details the impact that Wallace had on American Politics, an influence which is felt today. Overall, a superb read.

Unfortunately, Wallace's harnessing of some of the most hateful instincts in American culture has sullied his name. However, he was a more complicated man than conventional wisdom gives him credit for, and certainly one of the most ambitious. Lasher explains how he was another politician who exploited the perdurable themes of American populism. I saw on tv his farewell address after his last term as governor, and there were as many tearful black faces in the room as white ones (the PBS documentary doesn't show this, by the way). George, we hardly knew ye.
