Q: Are they water proof?

No there's mesh on the back (and obviously the fingers are open, only cover to the 2nd knuckle)

Q: Wld they work for football

If you don't need padding to protect the palms, then I think they'll work!

Q: Are you sure the size is based on circumference and not width? at that circumference they are baby hand size.

I just know I purchased small 2 yrs ago and just purchased Medium for and 8 and 7 yr old.

Q: Does this work for gymnastics using bars?

Again, these are not padded in the palm area. My grandaughter uses them for Ninja rings and such.
