## Overview

The Adafruit Motor/Stepper/Servo Shield v2.3 is a stackable, high-performance motor driver shield for Arduino, featuring TB6612 MOSFET drivers with 1.2A continuous and 3A peak current per channel, I2C-based PWM control requiring only two pins, and compatibility with up to 32 stacked shields for massive multi-motor projects. ## Description

We have upgraded the shield kit to make the bestest, easiest way to drive DC and Stepper motors. This shield will make quick work of your next robotics project! We kept the ability to drive up to 4 DC motors or 2 stepper motors, but added many improvements: Lots of other little improvements such as a polarity protection FET on the power pins and a bit of prototyping area. And the shield is assembled and tested here at Adafruit so all you have to do is solder on straight or stacking headers and the terminal blocks. Lets check out these specs again: 2 connections for 5V 'hobby' servos connected to the Arduino's high-resolution dedicated timer - no jitter! 4 H-Bridges: TB6612 chipset provides 1.2A per bridge (3A peak) with thermal shutdown protection, internal kickback protection diodes. Can run motors on 4.5VDC to 13.5VDC. Up to 4 bi-directional DC motors with individual 8-bit speed selection (so, about 0.5% resolution) Up to 2 stepper motors (unipolar or bipolar) with single coil, double coil, interleaved or micro-stepping. Motors automatically disabled on power-up Big terminal block connectors to easily hook up wires (18-26AWG) and power Arduino reset button brought up top Polarity protected 2-pin terminal block and jumper to connect external power, for separate logic/motor supplies Tested compatible with Arduino UNO, Leonardo, ADK/Mega R3, Due, Diecimila & Duemilanove. Review: Exactly what I needed - The 5 stars may be premature but so far this shield has really impressed me. My goal was to control multiple DC motors and this does that beautifully and easily. To start with there is plenty of documentation for this. I found a 51 page article to read while I was waiting for it to arrive and then there is the download that contains the library and more. The library responded to the "add zip library" prompt so it was just a matter of minutes before I was able to control my first motor with it by using their example sketch. From there it was a simple matter to have four motors hooked up and controlled. My first bit of advice is to order the stacking header pins the same time as you order the shield even if you don't think you'll ever stack shields. The reason being is that you are going to have to solder header pins anyway and if you use the stacking pins it gives you easy access to every Arduino pin without further soldering. The shield and the Arduino will control 4 motors without any additional wiring but if you need to add any sensors, LEDs, or whatever you might want you'll need access to the Arduino. My goal is to make a radio controlled 4 wheel drive crawler as soon as I can find the hardware that will interface with the Arduino. I've already done one with IR control but that has very limited range and not that good outdoors. (The sun is also an IR transmitter). Any help on the RC equipment would be appreciated.
Review: Great quality, support, and value - The Adafruit Motor Shield v2 lives up to the expectation of high quality products and fantastic support I've come to expect from Adafruit. It works just as advertised and there's a boat load of resources to help you out if you get stuck. It was only a few minutes from unpacking to testing my motors using the shield. The only thing I could say about it that isn't a glowing adjective is when stacked on an Arduino Uno R3 and running DC motors + servos, all the hookups for power and motors can get a little....messy. aside from that I can't think of anything negative to say about it.

- New version 2.3!
- Completely stackable design: 5 address-select pins means up to 32 stackable shields: that's 64 steppers or 128 DC motors! What on earth could you do with that many steppers? I have no idea but if you come up with something send us a photo because that would be a pretty glorious project.
- Instead of a L293D darlington driver, we now have the TB6612 MOSFET driver: with 1.2A per channel and 3A peak current capability. It also has much lower voltage drops across the motor so you get more torque out of your batteries, and there are built-in flyback diodes as well.
- Instead of using a latch and the Arduino's PWM pins, we have a fully-dedicated PWM driver chip onboard. This chip handles all the motor and speed controls over I2C. Only two pins (SDA & SCL) are required to drive the multiple motors, and since it's I2C you can also connect any other I2C devices or shields to the same pins. This also makes it drop-in compatible with any Arduino, such as the Uno, Due, Leonardo and Mega R3.
- As of 3/21/2014 we are shipping motor shields with the terminal blocks, and power jumper pre-soldered on. You'll still need to do a little soldering to put on the shield-headers (or stacking headers) but it should be even easier and faster to get started!

The Adafruit Motor Shield v2 lives up to the expectation of high quality products and fantastic support I've come to expect from Adafruit. It works just as advertised and there's a boat load of resources to help you out if you get stuck. It was only a few minutes from unpacking to testing my motors using the shield. The only thing I could say about it that isn't a glowing adjective is when stacked on an Arduino Uno R3 and running DC motors + servos, all the hookups for power and motors can get a little....messy. aside from that I can't think of anything negative to say about it.

I've used about half a dozen of these so far. They're the best Arduino motor shield for the money out there. Their use of i2c for DC/stepper motor control leaves all Arduino pins open for use by other devices. The two servo ports are very handy. I've thrown various voltages at the thing, never had any problems. The extra solder hole spots are great for adding things like i2c oled display, piezo buzzer, and other small things. I have used these with Arduino UNO, Nano, Wemos D1 R2, and Wemos D1 R2 mini. It takes a little bit of extra thinking and soldering to make them work with Wemos D1/mini (have to modify for 3.3v instead of 5v), but the end result is wifi control of its motors. Very convenient.
