Hard to find in dvd .....great price

This is a fabulous movie - one I saw on Tv years ago, but never forgot, and which I hunted for on Amazon, and happily found. It's the story of a young half caste British/Indian girl named Queenie, who is born in India, and whose looks don't show the Indian side of her heritage. Her mother sends her to a proper British School in India, and she tries to bring her daughter up as British. Some ugly incidents happen, which cause Queenie to have to go to England in a great hurry, where she struggles but eventually finds work at several different jobs, over a period of time, until finally, she makes it in the movie industry and becomes famous as a beautiful British movie star, but under a different name. Unfortunately, a previous nasty incident in India, raises it's ugly head and threatens to unravel her new life.

This TV movie is pretty good, though it pained me to see Claire Bloom made up to be an impoverished Indian woman and mother to the star of the film. Kirk Douglas as a ruthless Hollywood producer turns in a fine performance but then, when has he not?

This movie is wonderful .Romantic . A true historyI watched this movie when I was8 or 9 years old . I felt in loveWith history and with the actressAnd actors . Kirk DouglasIs in it !!!!!

This is a very good story and is done very well. I coudn't stop watching it and recommend it to anyjone who loves good movies.A+++++

I saw the movie years ago on television when I was very young. I purchased the dvd several months ago along with the book the movie is very loosely based on. This dvd however is awful quality- the sound is awful, it cannot be used with a surround sound dvd player, I had to turn my speakers off and use the television speakers, otherwise the only sound I got was humming of the music and instead of clear speaking voices, all the actors sound like they are saying “unmmmm”.As for the movie itself - as I mentioned it is very loosely based upon the book. They paint the main character in the movie as a heroin to feel sorry for. However the Queenie from the book was a self centered concieted brat from the time she was an 11yr old child until her death in her sixties. I cannot say whether I prefer the book or movie version of Queenie, honestly both were pretty awful in my opinion.

This movie is about a strong woman character, who unfortunately is caught within the patriarchal and racist practices that still are practiced today, yet she overcomes them as she overcomes her fears and wins.

Mom enjoyed

I just love this film. I'm not biased as my Dad is in it! It tells a good story of how Anglo Indians were in India before coming over to England. I also really love the main actor/actress too. Its a good film to watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Get comfy though as it is long but well worth it.

I was glued to this film from the very beginning. It is very long because originally shown as a TV series I discovered later. None of it drags. The acting is superb and it based on the life of a very famous film star. Her own story is far more engaging than any film she was ever in. Merle Oberon.

Immersive & Beautiful. A moving story of a Hollywood Legend "Merle Oberon". Mia Sara was wonderful...& whole cast were phenomenol. Sound track was amazing too. {Must see Classic} 👍

Just shows if you want something bad enough you can do it, but remember you might have to do things that you would not normally do.

seen the film a couple of times, EXCELLENT! brought it recently as gift for a friend.
