Hiltex 10247 8"x30" Steel Gardening Auger Bit
Where I live, there is little soft soil when digging and using post hole diggers will almost knock your fillings loose! Plus, due to the rocks, a hole 8" wide by any depth takes at least 15 minutes to an hour. I needed something to dig a hole deep enough for a 20' light pole so it needed to get down to at least 36" deep. I couldn't justify buying a gas or electric auger for $300-$400 and have to get help to use it. I purchased this auger after reading the reviews and seeing that I could use it with a 1/2" drill (with a separately purchased adapter for about 10 bucks).I started out drilling through about 10" of chert and kept getting hung up and having the drill stall. Rather than destroy a good cordless drill, I went with a 1/2" heavy duty drill. I was able to get my entire hole dug in less than 10 minutes and finished off the depth I needed with post hole diggers (only about 6" in softer soil). I highly recommend this for anyone who needs to dig post holes and not wanting to spend a fortune on a one or two man auger PLUS the auger bit. It does come with a few warnings from my own experience as follows -**WORDS OF WARNINGS FOR DIGGING SOIL**:*If you are using a cordless drill, make sure to use at least a 20 volt or better.*If you are using an electric drill, make sure to NEVER put it in continual mode! If you do and hit something hard that causes the bit to stop turning, the drill will continue to run, taking a risk of personal injury to yourself or your equipment!*The bottom blades are very sharp so keep your hands and feet away at all times!*Make sure to let the drill brace itself against your left leg when drilling otherwise you take a risk with it getting away from you and causing injury to yourself or your drill!*I found that using short bursts from the drill worked best for me until I got into deeper soil. It kept the auger bit from getting hung on roots or rocks.*Make sure your drill has plenty of torque to be able to handle what this auger requires otherwise, you will purchasing a new drill!*Finally, make sure you are physically able to use this with a drill. It should not be used if you cannot put a little muscle behind and it will give you a good workout!

So many uses! Worth every penny! Saves your back!
Bought this originally to extend fence all the way to our property line after hurricane caused some posts to sink in the sandy soil causing the top rails to be out of 'alignment' which was cited by home owner's association! Ordered an additional 6" auger and the 2-part post setting foam from Amazon as well. What a great investment! Still waiting to coordinate time with younger brother to repair fence but our almost 60 year old mother used it to dig a 3 feet diameter by 20 inches deep hole for 65 gallon oak tree issued by the city with ease. She started in the middle using it to create what I can only describe as taking giant plugs out the ground after taping trash bags around each leg! She simply let the weight of the device sink 6" in the ground (she used the 6" auger) then pulled it up sending the removed dirt flying (hence the need for the trash bags); She did this all the way till the auger was completely in the ground then proceeded to make more holes. She said it took between one to two minutes to do each hole. She then used a short round shovel to start removing the dirt between the holes that literally collapsed when the shovel blade dug in. Eventually she formed a center hole large and deep enough to put her feet in so after that she pretty much sat on the ground and scooped out the remaining dirt. In less than an hour's time she had a huge hole done and prepped for her new tree! She felt confident in her ability because the night before she used the 4" auger to set a wooded post in the back yard to attach a solar light to and that took all of 30 minutes between digging, setting the foam, and hanging the light. See the pictures. Because she likes to mix her own potting soil for her houseplants as well as garden soil and compost for her raised beds, we recently got her a 3 1/4 cubic feet cement mixer to go with the 1 1/2 mixer she's had for the past ten years and within a couple of minutes everything is mixed throughly and better than you could do by hand allowing her to remain totally independent in her gardening escapades! She has always desired to grow her own grapes and now that we have this she has drawn up plans for an elaborate trellis system which is now possible thanks to this device! So confident she already bought the grapes. Great investment!

Perfect for 4x4's
This does exactly what I hoped it would do: bore holes in the ground for 4x4's. As others have mentioned, I took a 5/8" bolt and turned part of it down to fit a 1/2" drill chuck. Then drilled a hols through the bolt for the auger pin. I use a "real" 1/2" drill, one of those that rotates at about 100 rpm. One does need to brace oneself while in use because if you hit a rock or other obstruction, it could rip an arm out. But that is a risk with these big honkin' drills anyway, whether boring holes in the ground or drilling holes in concrete for anchor bolts- hit a stone and you know it. Read the Owner's Manual. You know, that little pamphlet you threw away the day you got the drill?By the way, another reviewer did the calculations to prove this auger will not work for 4x4's. He is wrong, but for the right reasons. If you bored a hole the diameter of the auger in solid material such as a 2x12 board, a 4x4 would never fit. However, these are for boring holes in dirt, which has some give to it. Actually the hole holds the 4x4 very nicely while you tap it in with a hefty hammer. Or do what I did- sink the 4x4 with the edge of a skid loader bucket.I did 7 holes, then my son borrowed it and did another 15. Which means two things: 1) this works well and 2) I need to order another one since my son NEVER returns my tools.

Not so bad for the price
I can not compare it with a gas model but it can dig a 4'' hole without effort (depending on the kind of soil). I was sand without rocks for me.The metal plate holding the motor tends to bend when pulling out the auger. This is not a major issue (for the price paid) as the auger is working fine anyway. It could have been a good idea to have a reverse gear. Sometimes, pulling the auger is quite difficult and tends to get stuck if you do not empty the blade often with digging the hole.My next big test will be to dig a 10'' hole with this thing. I am convinced that the best way will be to start with a 4'' hole followed by a 6'' hole and to finish with the 10'' hole. For now....I would recommend it.

Bon produit
Semble bon, pas encore essayé...J'y mettrais un peu plus de soudure si j'étais le fabriquant. Au prix qu'il le donne, a leur place j'y mettrais un peu d'effort.

not for tough jobs, but works for easy jobs
okay to use for putting posts in a soft general, with no stone, ground. it gives a violent kick back the moment it hits a tiny rock. the safety switch is the important part preventing the device from breaking your wrist. I got it at a special price lower than what it sells now. I think I got enough use out of it. there is the benefit to not having to clean the oil, and gasoline and changing the spark plugs when you get this electric one.

will be exactly what i need
Lots of great reviews made me choose this model. Initial use has been great. It only goes 2 feet down but man does it do it fast!! Warnings about roots and no reverse helped make my decision. For cost and function, you can't go wrong with this unit. I did buy a bigger bit however and would recommend that to anyone who may be considering this tool. Glad I found it and will use it around my acreage.
