10 minutes in I gave up
It starts with a woman buried up to her neck in sand being strangled by a boa constrictor. Okay, not a bad opening. Then we cut to a high rise in a city somewhere. Linda Blair walks in and shoots the security guard, played by Penn Jillette, through the head. Then she goes upstairs and holds a fat businessman at gunpoint while she starts to tell him her story. Then we're on a boat in the Amazon with a bunch of women prisoners and Blair is not among them. At that point, I stopped watching because I had this movie pegged. Checking other reviews confirmed my suspicions. Blair only appears in the scenes that bookend what is otherwise a standard low-budget Women in Prison movie, providing narration during the rest of its runtime. This is a typical cheap tactic for drawing in audiences. Furthermore, I didn't care about Blair's character or her beef with the businessman because she callously murdered an innocent security guard who was just doing his job. So, no real reason for me to watch this. I recommend you don't either.

Penn Jillette first movie
Savage Island is one hour and eighteen minutes and was released in theaters on September 1985. The story starts at the present and goes backwards. Daly is an escaped prisoner from a South American island where the women are forced to mine for diamonds. Daly arranges to meet with Luker, the business man who profits from it. She forces him at gun point to listen to the whole story of how she planted spies and put an end to it all. In the end Daly whips out and Uzi and kills Luker when he tries to take the gun out of his safe to kill her. This is your basic women prison movie of the seventies and eighties. It has your sex, violence, nudity and women fight. The movie was put together from other movies with only the scenes of Linda Blair as being original. Savage Island gets a C- for not being original.DVD Extras1. Feature Film2. Charles Band Intro 18 minutes3. Grindhouse Featurette 2 minutes4. Full Moon Trailersa. Killer Eye: Halloween Hauntb. Not sure what all of the bad reviews are about.
This was actually a pretty decent movie, for what it is. It is, in many respects, the typical "women in prison movie," made slightly worse by it seeming to have been filmed partially in Spanish and overdubbed, and made significantly better by the gratuitous nudity throughout.Don't get me wrong - this is hardly a first-run movie. And it may not even qualify as a "B" movie. Perhaps it is just a really decent "C" movie. But if you are a fan of the "women in prison" genre itself, this one was a lot better than some of that subgenre that I have watched.

Overall, a waste of time unless you truly love the 70's and 80's vibe of D-class VHS movies.
OMG... what a POS. The plot... horrible. The acting... atrocious. The cinematography... extremely low-budget, blurry, and difficult to see at times. Linda Blair was in 2 scenes, intro and closing (totaling 4 minutes or so), simply to lure people to waste precious life minutes viewing this. The one thing that is even somewhat valuable is the stereotypical unnecessary nudity that movies of the 70's and 80's were known for. There is plently of T&A and 70's-pubes in fight scenes, sex scenes, escape scenes, and pretty much any scene the director felt horny apparently... lol. This is one of those movies that pubescent boys would sneak to watch on late-night cable TV then brag about at elementary school recess the next day. Overall, a waste of time unless you truly love the 70's and 80's vibe of D-class VHS movies.

Kinda average
This is a fairly hard movie to find, and was only looking for it as a hardcore Blair fan. Blair is barely even in the movie: just a few minutes at the beginning and a few at the end. A inadvertently humorous exploitation flick using the women in prison/women in chains motif. Was wondering why this hadn't been updated to dvd and is only available on vhs. Well, perhaps because it's, mmmmm..........not so good.

A Better Version Exists (across the pond)
I decided to give this flik a try after hearing Charles Band of Full Moon Pictures describe its' genesis in the rap he gives as part of the extras in all of the newly re-issued "Grindhouse Collection" from Full Moon. At a point in the past Band apparently found a bunch of sleazy WIP style foreign made films and purchased the rights to them... then re-packaged one of them with a wrap-around story line featuring Linda Blair - in order to give the film a bit of Hollywood Star Power draw for the domestic market.Personally, altho I'm as big a fan of Linda's work as any, I was more drawn to the film by the promise of some good hard WIP action such as foreign directors (like Jess Franco) can sometimes deliver. Unfortunately, the product provided by the Full Moon package is flawed by a very poor transfer which renders the viewing experience sub-par. As other reviewers have noted - this is particularly annoying during any dark night-time scenes - which are virtually un-viewable - as well as hindering a full appreciation of the many scenes of naked female flesh - that are likely what one would purchase this product to enjoy in the first place. But, please be aware that there is a BETTER VERSION available. A little probing around on the internet provided the additional info that this film (in its' original release) was actually an Italian effort (filmed in South America) entitled "Hotel Paradis(e)" (aka "Escape From Hell"). This original version of the film is available with a much better picture quality from Amazon.co.uk (Britain) - and it even features 'inserts' of hardcore XXX scenes - of course there's no Linda Blair - AND - the DVD requires a 'region-free' player! - something that every mondo-weirdo movie hound should invest in!I'm generally 'liking' the new crop of 'Grindhouse" product that Full Moon has been releasing, but the picture quality IS pretty variable from feature to feature. In the case of "Savage Island" the image quality is poor and detracts from the over-all enjoyment so, despite the fact that it is packed full of all the good stuff that one looks for in this type of flik, I can't give this bit of, otherwise, interesting (s)exploitational fun more than an average rating -
