ASCD Bestseller! Classroom management is traditionally a matter of encouraging good behavior and discouraging bad by doling out rewards and punishments. But studies show that when educators empower students to address and correct misbehavior among themselves, positive results are longer lasting and more wide reaching. In Better Than Carrots or Sticks, longtime educators and best-selling authors Dominique Smith, Douglas Fisher, and Nancy Frey provide a practical blueprint for creating a cooperative and respectful classroom climate in which students and teachers work through behavioral issues together. After a comprehensive overview of the roots of the restorative practices movement in schools, the authors explain how to Establish procedures and expectations for student behavior that encourage the development of positive interpersonal skills; Develop a nonconfrontational rapport with even the most challenging students; and Implement conflict resolution strategies that prioritize relationship building and mutual understanding over finger-pointing and retribution. Rewards and punishments may help to maintain order in the short term, but they're at best superficially effective and at worst counterproductive. This book will prepare teachers at all levels to ensure that their classrooms are welcoming, enriching, and constructive environments built on collective respect and focused on student achievement. Review: Worthwhile read. - Great for teachers who need a boost to classroom management techniques. Simple read with profound ideas about kids and how they learn, as well as self reflection for the teacher or adult in the classroom. Good for parents as well. Review: Very insightful - Perhaps it's a lack of exposure to other classroom management texts, but this one is easily one of the best reads. It's a great guide full of interesting concepts that I had never considered before. This book REALLY changed my perspective on a lot of things and I find myself more comfortable and at peace with the way I interact with my students. It's a great read. Gives a lot for you to think about and consider. Even if you're not going to be a teacher or educator in some form or fashion, it's a great guide for raising a generation of thoughtful, intuitive and compassionate people.

This book is full of good strategies that teachers can use to build student-teacher and student-student relationships in the classroom, and the authors use many student examples to illustrate these strategies. Love the bookโฆbut the pages keep falling out!
Love the book so far (just getting started) and have tons of notes and stickies. However, the pages keep falling out at the spine when I turn the pages. Hopefully it is just a small production issue that doesnโt cause people to not order this great resource for how to think about their practices and how to build up strong school cultures and climates through the use and great practices.

Much needed in schools today!
This is an easy read with excellent strategies for creating a school community where all can succeed. Students come to school with more than academic needs and we can create a safe space for them to learn ways to navigate this world with all the baggage some of them may carry. Every behavior has a cause and every student is a person who deserves our best.

I feel like Iโm a better teacher already
I loved this book! I honestly couldnโt put it down. With every turn and example, I kept thinking of moments in my teaching career that I could have done better or times I was right in how I approached a childโs behavior. Iโve always thought more of a positive approach, but this help me solidify what that actually means and how to practically approach and use it in my practice. :)

Best Restorative Classroom Management Book!
I really enjoyed the book and liked that it had tons of information that I can use in the classroom in only 6 chapter. The study guide at the end makes for a great school led PD .

Must-Have for the 21st Century Teacher
Highly recommended read for teacher, and even parents. Great book with a lot information. Includes plenty of research based findings. More teachers need to be using these practices instead of the current reward or punishment system that does little to teach kids how to actually behave, nor does it encourage kids to make amends for their mistakes. The methods also work really well into a trauma informed school/classroom.
