Inpatient Group Psychotherapy

Needs to be updated
Excellent book, but now that it is 2019, it needs to be updated to reflect the current health care system. This book details average inpatient hospitalization stays as 10-90 days. The current average length of stay at an inpatient hospital is 3-15 days. So a lot of the information about how to run groups was not as applicable now - in the book, it assumed patients would be together in groups for weeks, but the reality is that sometimes patients are only together for a day or two.

Great if you like old-fasioned Freudian thinking
Yalom is certainly experienced and an authority on psychotherapy -- but he has not left Freudian thinking entirely behind. Labeling people by their mental diagnoses, the belief that the therapist is an authority who can intuit what the client is * really* thinking.... lots and lots of this throughout the book.

Very informative.
I ordered this book for a class. It had lots of good information. Something that I would referred to later. Would be a good read for someone if they were interested in the topic.

and this book delivers much of his expertise in an easy, enjoyable read
Irvin Yalom is considered one of the foremost experts on group psychotherapy, and this book delivers much of his expertise in an easy, enjoyable read. I have gleaned some great advice form this book, and I have enjoyed incorporating much of that advice into my own practice. This book is a must read.

Bible of group therapy
This is the Bible of group therapy. Any counselor or therapist should read this book if there is any possibility of working with groups. My only complaint is that you have to read into the book to get the information. I wish there was a quick guide to group to have as a reference!

Wonderful book
Down to earth language and very readable. It clearly sets out how group counselling works in practice and the case studies are really helpful in adding to the explanations in each chapter. This is a very informative work and is well worth what I paid: it helped me get my dream job!
