Penny Dreadful: City of Angels

Very disappointing
It's hard to see why this had the 'Penny Dreadful' title - it has nothing in common with the excellent Penny Dreadful, either characters, tone, or quality of writing. This has a thin (but passable) detective story but it's overloaded with too many side plots, most of which either go nowhere or are clumsily handled. The supernatural element, something the original excelled in, could have been dropped completely without affecting the story in any way. On top of which the music and sound effects are often so loud as to drown out the dialogue. The acting & cinematography are very good, which just makes it all the more disappointing.

Why only one season?
I really enjoyed this, and was disappointed to find it only ran for one season. It explores the political and racial tensions in 1930s California in an interesting and entertaining way. Natalie Dormer acts and dances her socks off in a variety of roles. Lorenza Izzo and her terrifying headdress have extraordinary screen presence, despite having very little dialog. Rory Kinnear was relatable as the conflicted American Nazi sympathiser.

Good in parts
But a very slow burner. Sadly the story is overwhelmed by political correctness and loses its way.I can’t see how this relates to the earlier Penny Dreadful series which was excellent. Just about worth the price

Great quality, blu-ray to expensive
Brilliant! I love the original show and this spin off and am now finally glad to have all the seasons on my shelf. Sadly the blu-ray cost was absolutely ridiculous so I just had to settle for the dvd which was frustrating

Brilliant
This was brilliant to watch, every one in it was amazing. It's a shame that there wont be a season 2 at the moment
