how much surface area will it cover?

Nowhere near as much as you would like. One packet will easily cover an average cake made with standard 8inch sandwich tins...but bigger than that and you have to go too thin

How much do I need to cover a 20cm cake (top and sides)? Can I easily combine two packs together if need be?

Don't know the exact amount for the cake,but when I did it last year I used 2 packs. Just kneed them together well. The navy looks lovely with some silver glitter/spray on it! Good luck! I am attempting a real one this year

Is this suitable for a tree trunk cake 8"?

I think this would work quite well. It's a good quality product so should be fine.
